okay, I have had my sony STR-de445 for 3 years. Yesterday when I went to play a dvd, you could hear the music but no talking. This is a major problem, first I checked to see if any of the wires were loose, no. Then I tried test tone and center did not work. Then I tried a new wire, same problem. Then I tried hooking up a left speaker to the center output, same problem. Then I tried putting the center output to the left speaker and the speaker worked. So this must mean my receiver has a problem. I don't think I still have warranty even though I should since I only bought it 3 years ago. Anyone have ideas or suggestions?

Could try resetting the receiver to factory settings?

Also I found this for a similar model:
545 Manual - similar to 445?
Page 45 says:
Make sure sound field function is on (press SOUND FIELD - MODE).
Select a sound field containing the word "cinema" or "virtual"
Adjust speaker volume
Make sure the center speaker size is set to either small or large.

Tried all that, I'm almost positive it's not a settings issue...

j/king by the way.

Certain recievers of many brands have their center channel go out. I believe and old Onkyo 797 model had a similar problem. I believe it is usually a soldering problem. Sometimes 'hitting' the reciever sets it back in place.

I say go for it.

That's why I'll never buy a Sony product again.

My $3000 Sony 36XBR400 after 2 years conked out recently and Sony won't do jack even though there are well documented problems with this specific TV.
My $600 S550D DVD player conked out after a year and a half due to the infamous C13:00 error that nearly all Sony DVD players get after 2 years.

No more Sony ever.

You're lucky your Sony lasted three years. They seem to go bad after two. I think there is a sticker on the back mentioning something about planned obsolecence.

Check the setting in your DVD player. Could be the settings are not correctly placed. Most likely in stereo mode.

I highly doubt it's the receiver. It's either the settings on the dvd player or receiver.

Could be the digital cable, but I doubt it as most cables are competently finished. You can also take an RCA cable and plug it in to see if sound comes out.

If your center speaker is new, maybe you can test it to see if it works by plugging it in a different system.
=================

Btw, I had a similar issue with my speakers until I adjusted the settings. See also that the digital cable input is ASSIGNED rather than optical, etc.

Sometimes 'hitting' the reciever sets it back in place.

...Or opening it up and resoldering it? Or would I get a shock from that?

What is this error? I have a sony dvd player as well...

Why the Fvck do they charge 20-30% more than other brands if they're crapping out in 2 years, godamn this pisses me off

This one for my DVD.

This is for the S560D which is more common.

This is for the S330 which is also very common.

My brother in law has an S560D which broke down but we were able to repair it thanks to a guy who figured out a way of fixing the 560D. Unfortunately, I was going to try fixing mine but the S550 is completely different from the S560 and couldn't

Yep, sounds bad... but...

Then I tried putting the center output to the left speaker and the speaker worked.
ITYM You put the center speaker to the left output and it worked... but if not, then it sounds like it's NOT the receiver.

I had a similar problem with my receiver.
I had to resolder the connections of the speakers' relays on the mainboard due to cracked solder joints. After resoldering it's good as new.

I had one Sony receiver in my life. Crapped out on me and Sony wanted almost as much as I paid for it just to diagnose it. 27" Sony TV sound was so bad I sold it. Dont even look at their stuff anymore.

My $1400 Marantz 7002 had the center channel fade in and out. But it never stopped completely. It would be intermittent during movies and TV but a test tone always worked. I dealt with it by turning off the center channel and then once i dropped the remote i bought a yamaha on clearance. I am not spending that much on a receiver again. To clarify by "that much" I mean i bought it for $700 new.

Thank you. I've waited 12 years for an answer, suffering for so long without the center channel.

I'm with you there. I got screwed on TWO $1500 Sony receivers. I tell ya, for the money, Onkyo can't be beat. They sound great, they last forever, and they take a beating. Plus, if it goes out, you're out $500 instead of $1500 ;) I still have a Onkyo receiver from 1996 and my son uses it for his XBox/main sound system. Works perfectly to this day!

As for the center channel speaker, I agree with the soldier points. The center channel can easily get overloaded...especially if it's a smaller low ohm speaker. The contact points might have melted. That's why center channel speakers are usually larger and heavy-duty. They do a lot of work.
