So i just built a new computer. This new computer has a new cpu and mobo, but the same hard drive. From what i hear, i need to do a windows repair install. So i built my computer, but the repair install wont work. I follow the directions, but i never even get the option to repair install!

I boot up with the windows CD
When it says "To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER", I press enter.
I accept the liscenec agreements by clicking f8.
Then, i am supposed to select the XP installation i want to repair, and press R to start the repair.

Unfortunately, i dont have that option. Nothing happens if i click R. The only options i have are to delete the partion, to make a new partition for windows, or to continue with the install and erase that copy. If i do this, it will format my drive. Help! How can i get the "repair" option to appear?

I tried typing "bootcfg" into the recovery console, but this did not fix it. I also tried "fixmbr", but this did nothing also. Help would be greatly appreciated. I'm posting from another computer of course.

Is this an OEM copy of windows or retail. I know some oem copies that come with branded machines don't give that option (repair disks... hah).
Also, is the previous installation of windows in a default folder? If not, installation may not find it and thus not give you option to repair.
Also, if you go on with the last option it will not format unless you tell it to. Just don't allow it to change anything regarding the drive, and all your data will still be there and visible after installation. DO take backups though, as anything can go wrong.

It's a retail disk. It's in the default folder too. What happens if i just install windows again? What files will be lost? I already backed up all of the data i could think of, but i really dont want to wipe the harddrive.

Try running a repair thru the recovery console first (R @ 1st screen). After you choose the proper partition w/ windows, type chkdsk /r at the prompt. After it's done try to boot to the OS. If you still unable to get into normal mode boot to the cd again and on the 3rd screen you should see the repair option.

Didnt work. The computer wont boot up, so I cant use sysprep. I tried the chkdsk /r thing, and it seemed like it was going to work. It went all the way to 100% (took a while) and said that it fixed one or more errors. But it wouldnt boot off the hard drive to the OS. Then when i tried the windows CD, i had the same problem. When its gets to the screen where i should be able to do a repair install, it just says "Press enter to install windows" "press L to delete partition" or "press C to make a new partition."
Nothing seems to work. Any other ideas.

I think you all are missing something. pyro786 said he tried fixmbr. Heep bad mojo. His only option is to install a different hdd and install software to read the existing hdd without formatting it because the boot record has no record of this drive now and absolutely will not recognise it without formatting and partitioning. The dos commands he is trying are running from the cd loaded into memory not the hdd.
