OK, I'm lookin to get a new laptop and am a big gamer. My choices are as follows:

Get a Dell with the GeForce 4 4200 Go
Get a Dell with the ATI Mobility 9000
Get a Toshiba with the GeForce FX Go 5600
Wait untill someone decides to sell a laptop with the ATI Mobility 9600

So, what do I do? I have never had any laptop other than Dell but am open to buy from someone else if peeps can provide some real good feedback. In addition, the FX 5800 Ultra for the desktop SUKED so does that mean that the mobile 5600 does?? OIYOIYOIY Help!!!

The words "Laptop" and "Big Gamer" should never be in the same sentence. Buy a desktop.

If you have money to burn, spend it on something you'll actually use. :p

Merc......you seem to not be quite up to date on what the latest laptops can do. I have a Dell thats a year old (yesterday in fact) and it'll run U2K3 at 1280x1024 at an average of 37 FPS...QUITE PLAYABLE!!!:) As for buildin a desktop.....I already have 9 of those and don't really need another at the moment (I wanna work on the mobile LAN :).

You tell me if my desktop is outta date :):) (I'm waitin for the 5900 Ultra, thats why there is a slow vid card in it)

EliteBastards has a pics of a German review of four laptops sporting an FX5200, FX5600, MR9000, and MR9600P on various processors. The MR9600P + XP2500+ was far faster than the FX5600 + P4M 2.4GHz, and it was half the price and offered the same battery life.

Now, one review shouldn't be the end of your research, but the MR9600P numbers are a promising start, especially if you can find the card in a cheaper notebook.

Oh, god. You're actually using SiSoft to benchmark? :Q

I'm plenty up to date on laptops. If you'd mentioned that you already had a desktop and wanted your mobile fix, I would have responded differently. But suffice it to say that 37fps is not "Big Gamer" playable. Life begins at 60. :)

Poor poor misinformed peeps. Any True gamer knows that wgile 60 fps is the "bragging" spot. 30 fps average is plenty fast for any twitch game to run perfectly.

Ive been saying that for ages, but no one here will have it.
Thats why some games have the frame rate limited to 30fps, not to annoy people who like to brag about their frame rates, its there because, that is all thats needed to keep it smooth.

Just want to pitch in on this whole 30/60 fps being the minimum frame rate... kinda reminded me of the whole "ut2k3 runs so crap on my computer!!!" thing when it first came out.

Stop going "tut tut" at one another and think about how different people will want different frame rates to feel that everything is "smooth." I personally will not go for 30fps average in UT2k3, but 30fps was fine for me in Deus Ex. The former I play with a relatively high mouse sensitivity, which helps me to dodge-jump and aim at the same time better. But to still aim as well in other situations as I would with lower mouse sensitivity, I need to feel no stutter at all. And my personal experience is that stutters are more pronounced at high mouse sensitivity settings. Now, I'm not saying that you play with a low mouse sensitivity, but I'm just describing a personal experience of how 30fps affects me in ut2k3.

In Deus Ex/Thief/System Shock 2 (see a link there ;) ), I'm fine with having a lower mouse sensitivity. I keep killing to a minimum in Thief, and in Deus Ex, I sneak around a fair bit too. I think I killed at least half of my enemies in DX using the Dragon's Tooth (for those who haven't played the game, it's essentially a sword). In those games, I don't need to dodge-jump everywhere and look around a lot in a short amount of time, unlike in a FFA in ut2k3.

In fact, 25fps in Morrowind was perfectly fine for me... at times it dropped below 20 (esp. where I stockpile extra items :) ) and that was still fine. I can feel that it wasn't perfectly "smooth", but I could still go and fight a daedra lord.

Well, enough ranting. I just want to make a case for people who are after high frame rates... they aren't necessarily "peeps" or "misinformed" or "bandwagon junkies" (I added that last one). Personally, if you can hit that 60fps, then you can turn up some graphical settings, and lose some fps, and see if it still feels smooth. Conversely, if you are on 30fps, and find that it isn't smooth, then start tweaking to see if you can get the fps up.

BoomAM, just want to point out that something like ut2k3 will not have a max fps of 30. But yes, some other games will be fine having that limit.

So, back to the actual topic... I'll say either the 5600Ultra or 9600Pro. Darkhorse27, about the "5800ultra sux ==> 5600 sucks" bit... the new 5600s are doing better, but I'm not sure which one the mobile version is based on. I'll probably lean towards the 9600Pro either way, but only just. I'll be happy with either one in a laptop.

I'm gonna get flamed, aren't I? Please be gentle. :)

I know games like ut2k3 wont have a frame limiter, i own it. lol, i cant personally comment about 30fps in ut2k3, cos both my old gf3 and my 9700pro play/ed it at above 60fps.

Bty Jibby, i wasnt too keen on the dragons tooth to be honest, but i kept it in my inventory cos it made a good light source replacement for when my bio-energy was depleted. lol

But other games that can be considered "fast" such as GTA3/ViceCity, are perfectly fine at 30fps, in fact, if i switch the frame limter off, the fps goes upto about 80fps, but seems very jerky.

Either the 5600ultra or the 9600pro would be good choises.
I`d say that the 5600Ultra would be faster though, as nVidia have already seen the performance of the 9600pro, and are likely to try and beat it.
But i personally would go for the 9600pro. Ive read that it uses less power, and automatically OCs itself, depending on the work put on the chip and the available power.
