Ahhhhh! How do I get rid of Windows Messenger in XP!

I did this to initially get rid of it:
How can I remove Windows Messenger?
Open C:\WINDOWS\inf\sysoc.inf and change msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7 to msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,7
Then use Add/Remove Windows Components to remove messenger.

I recently installed some Windows XP "critical updates" and it is back with a vengence. The above setting is not on "hide" but Messenger is still not listed in the add/remove programs.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

I got the exact same problem, go into the Messenger options and select Do not load on Windows Startup (don't have the exact wording because I'm not on a XP machine right now), that seems to work for me 🙂

that's the problem as it installs stuff for messenger which isn't necessary if you don't use the program.
try this to uninstall messanger as seen in a previous posting.
START | RUN... then in the open box enter this: (copy / paste below)

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

With Messenger so easy to turn off (set to not run at startup in Windows and Outlook), what is the
advantage to removing it completely?

(I'm not trying to be argumentative, really don't understand)

Make sure you don't have messenger running on the systray, go to program files and rename the messenger folder. It will never bother you again.

Yes commish is correct, that is the easiest way I have found. If you ever want it back just rename it again.

This seems unnecessarily difficult. When you boot up and the icon appears in the systray, click on the icon and select open. Then it is TOOLS>OPTIONS>PREFERENCES.
At the top, within general the top checkbox is ?Run this Program When Windows Starts?
UNCHECK THE BOX.
Reboot, icon is now gone.
End of story.

This does not work for me. It starts up anyway, or when I launch Outlook Express.

Freaky!
OK one last thing before you format/reinstall 😀
START>RUN>type "MSCONFIG"
STARTUP TAB>uncheck box for windows messenger

If that don't work then I'm full of SH*T

?Run this Program When Windows Starts?
UNCHECK THE BOX.

The above does not work for me. Messenger will load when I run Outlook Express. In fact, if I listen closely I can hear XP snickering at that feeble attempt to disable it.

Renaming the directory does work.

Thanks all.

Ok, here's a clean and neat way to get rid of it: Start>Run and then copy and paste "RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove" without the quotation marks. Click OK and you're done.

<< Messenger will load when I run Outlook Express >>

LOL, You have to uncheck the box for messenger startup within Outlook (express) also

Tools=>Options=>Other

(now YOU can laugh at the evil one)

LOL that was to easy!

one thing i noticed though when you disable messenger is when you open a browser and access your hotmail account, the browser virtually hangs for about a minute everytime you do anything. it seems that it is just very slow accessing anything on the hotmail site. it may seem that you can't click on anything on that browser and it does look like it has hanged the browser, but wait for a few more seconds and whatever your initial click was, it will happen.

open a separate browser and access any site (even msn.com) and no problem.

when messenger is enabled, no problem at all.

anyone experienced this?

Microsoft isn't making it easy to dump messenger. It appears they want to force you to use it. My response might be to dump both messenger and outlook and look for something that actually works as I want it to work.

"What do I want to uninstall today?"

zosim,
I had the exact same problem... I mentioned it in this thread here... For me it seems odd that disabling messenger would have this effect on hotmail.......
