i was opening my computer cause i was really board. Id decided to clean my fan on my processor as it seems very dusty. (my first time doing so) When i screwed it back in, placed the case back on, i realized that i didnt hear my usually loud fan. When i opened my case (pc was still running at that time..stupid me) i saw that my fan wasnt even running!??! I was so scared as i saw many videos of cpu's blowing up cause there wasnt a heat sink of them.

Really scared but turned out the power plug that goes from the fan to the motherboard was backwords ^_^

btw, a couple weeks ago, i wanted to learn how to place the processor into the socket so i youtubed it. I found a lot of links where the cpu blew up cause it did not have a heatsink so you can see why i was so worried -_-

and a very funny one <--NSFV.. if u cant stand a few cursing

Lol one time i watched anime and my head asploded. The blood went on my case and almost fried my psu 🙁

I've slammed a screwdriver into a motherboard before while using it to put the heatsink clip on. Tore off two capacitors and the board is still working to this day without them. Aside from that, killed one system via static shock, but nothing too spectacular. On my aunt's previous system one of the capacitors in the power supply decided to leak one day. Always entertaining to see smoke come pouring out of a computer when you turn it on. Deer, quality power supplies.

how much time do i have before my cpu blows up without a fan and heatsink?

specs below in sig

poor poor you with that celeron!

saw an AMD Duron core, burn out on tomshardware (they have good videos of stuff burning up, or cooking eggs on CPUs and eating the eggs). Took about 15 seconds, a little less before it smoke and 'blew up'.

You should have tried an overclocked Pentium D. 😀

Second video is completely FAKE.

or are u talking about how they acted it out?

There no way you can make a Duron through POST with a core voltage of 4.2V.

So I was playing CS and this one noob scored 3 hs's in a row on me and I got quite pissed and threw my monitor at my comptuer.

Most of the newer processors are smart enough to throttle back or shutdown if they overheat. There's a default setting in the BIOS, if it hits that temp then your comp turns off automatically, in theory of course. You could disable it if you want, or if you're stupid.

You were worried for nothing.

Even with just the heatsink in contact with the CPU, it would last a while before it got TOO hot.

Also, not sure if this applies to all CPUs, but long time back when I was running the original Intel celeron 300A OCed to 450...I had a crappy ass HS/F since I didn't know any better. Well, it was insufficient cooling for sure and my CPU overheated. However, for a while it would just freeze my comp and I would reboot and that would be that. So overheating doesn't necessarily break your CPU right away. Of course after about 1 month of freezing from overheating, the CPU did eventually die.

But my main point is that just b/c the fan isn't on doesn't mean your CPU will die right away. The heatsink will take a lot of heat and still b e able to dissapate a good amount of that heat by itself.

If you have a heatsink but no fan it'll be fine. Your motherboard will just shutoff when it overtemps. Depending on the CPU 70-90C. The thing I hate about my board is I need to make something up so it thinks I have a fan going. With it off, My a64 with stay around 53C, but it'll die in 5 minutes anyway if there is no cpu fan

Ah I remember that THG video, pretty cool. Its nice how the P4 actually STAYED ON, would an Athlon 64 do the same or just throttle till it got too hot and shut off? I know that Cool n Quiet has to be on for it to throttle.

That's usually a feature of the motherboard, not the processor.

Most AMD motherboards shut down immediately when the temp reaches a set level. No shutdown screen, no beeping, nothing. Just straight power cut.
