Alabama's law allowing marriages at 14 was enacted in 1852, when the state was primarily rural and people were getting married at younger ages than today.

Most Southern states have 16 as a minimum age for marriage. Arkansas, like Alabama, uses 14, and Mississippi has no minimum age, provided a parent or judge consents.
