Ahhh, new tire is bulging

Well, I just got new tires on my wife's car today. About 50 miles later, I noticed the sidewall bulging. Is this a defective tire? Or is this caused by the people putting it on damaging the tire?

Man this sucks.

And they are Goodyear Comfortreads if that matters.

EDIT: Yes the tires is off, and the spare on. The bulging tire is on my truck bed and it's off to the tire place to demand a new tire. They are closed now as it's 7:30 PM when I noticed it.

I don't believe tires, especially brand new tires, are supposed to bulge. Perhaps you should take the car back to the shop and ask the nice people to replace the affected tire or at least give you a really BS reason why the bulge is not a defect, but a feature that you should cherish.

Have a nice day. 🙂

AHahahaha, I am worried that they will say it's a special feature or give me some sort of BS.

The edit was there before that. I clarified by adding: "They are closed now as it's 7:30 PM when I noticed it."

This part:
"Yes the tires is off, and the spare on. The bulging tire is on my truck bed and it's off to the tire place to demand a new tire."
was there atleast 5 minutes prior.

How could it have been there 5 minutes prior if you started the thread at 8:06 ?

Found this at goodyear's web site:
" Note: It's natural for radial tires to have a slight bulge in the sidewall at their proper inflation pressure."

it is a defective tire (if it is really bulging)

i don't think you'll have to "demand" , they'll fix it if its borked

Thank you. The tire is bulging out about 1 inch. I've sen tiny bumps before. This is nto tiny.

It happened to me once a long time ago. I bought a used car, and found out later it had been sitting on the lot for quite awhile. The tires were nearly new, and I got a flat.

Long story short, all the tires had blisters in the sidewall. A tire dealer told me it was probably due to it sitting on the lot being baked in the sun. Dunno if that had anything to do with it, but goodyear did replace them.

I've never liked goodyears much.

don't drive on it, probably a significant problem

edit - probably safe to drive to the store, but i'd keep it parked til you do.

Ah, no. They will have a slight bulge at the *contact point* with the road, IE you don't want to inflate the tire so much that it is a perfect circle with 4000 lbs of car resting on it. However a bulge in the sidewall (or anywhere other than a constantly moving one at the bottom) is potentially very dangerous.

This was probably a manufacturing defect - it /could/ be made worse by overinflating the tire severly, but probably just a bad tire. You should have no problem getting it replaced, happens all the time. (relatively speaking)

nope...a buldging sidewall will eventually blowout and needs to be replaced ASAP. You should have some sort of warranty and it will not cost you a dime.

You've probably broken a belt in the tire. Some models are "infamous" for doing it. I had some crappy tires that came on my 88 Blazer and all four of them got bulges. The local tire place replaced two of them, but the factory rep denied the other two were bad, even though the dealer thought they were. I started saving up for a new set (all 4) tires, and about a month later, I'm going 35 and the back end starts shaking like hell, and I drive over to the tire dealer again. One of the rear tires had started coming apart, and the other original was bad too, along with one of the replacements.

This time, the rep didn't play around, I got 4 new tires, not the same model as original, and I had no problems with those.

The only bulge should be at the bottom, if it feels "lumpy" on the side, it's not good!
