More people die everyday from auto accidents and "regular" murders. They are making too big of a deal.

Except that this is more than one murder by the same person randomly and in a sensational way. "Regular" murders, as you put them, tend to happen in certain areas, where people can limit their chances of being victims by avoiding said areas (unless of course you CAN'T avoid those areas). But the sniper strikes just about anywhere randomly with seemingly no motive. That scares the sh!t out of people. And auto accidents are rarely malicious and with a purpose, unlike the sniper.
So, I'm sure they apologize profusely for interrupting your television program, but some people might be interested in this.

They don't have to put the police on nationwide, they could just broadcast locally, where it really matters.
