Ahhh ! I hate Prime95 !

hi,

running my XP1800+ on a soyo dragon plus...i have my FSB in the 140s (max. was 145)...'looking' stable.....but prime95 bitches like crazy !

I already had to turn down my FSB to 137, i dont want to go down any further since my xp1800 then wont be seen as 'XP1900+" anymore in the bios.

I increased my core voltage +0.050....but still some issues in prime. I have one 256mb stick of crucial ram, memory timings maxed out..eg latency down and everything, CAS2.

So..how should i continue ? Lowering my FSB even further ? [Its already at 137 🙁 ].....or playing with the ram-settings instead ?

My cooling is not top notch - i have an alpha 8045 and a relatively slow sunon fan...system is at 46C/47C under full load...i think this should be ok......

Any advice for a nice and stable overclock ?

Besides prime95, are there any other apps that are giving you problems? If you are confident that your system is stable running the applications you normally run, what difference does prime95 make to you?

You take risks getting up in the morning, walking across the street, or sticking your face in a fan. Oh yeah, and overclocking.

well..that's the point 🙂 i could of course totally ignore prime95, too

I dont have any probs in "real life" as long as i keep my fsb below 145....but on the other hand i also think that a system which is 'proven' stable may have some benefits, too.

It's just a strange thought that Prime (and/or then also Seti@Home etc...) does calculations...which are definetly wrong....i mean...who wants a computer who computes the wrong values ? 🙂

But you're right - it fore sure may also depend on the applications/games...maybe its too much worry if anything runs ok anyway 🙂

What if you set the CAS to 3? Not so sure but, I remember seeing somewhere that setting the CAS to 3 raises the speed limit of a memory module from the 130's to the 140's. Increasing the I/O voltage could help too.

You would be better off setting your CPU to default then setting your ram to cas 3. DDR memory is atleast supposed to run at cas 2.5.

nonoononon...not CAS3 (shudder) !

i found the solution:

I changed the "Write Recovery" at the DRAM settings again from 1T to 2T (leaving the other settings at optimum, of course cas2...)...and it has greatly improved my sys's stability.

Now running 146 fsb, and xp 1800 runs at 1680 without Prime95 bitching !

Prime95 is not worth squat. Use burnk7.exe from cpuburn and watch your system fold (on a flaky sys, it will take a few mins, but I would run it for minumum 12 hours to see if system is good or not).

Dam, cpuburn is INTENSE, my cpu temp went from 49 to 55 in about twenty seconds :Q I got scared!!!!
