A friends company got a the power knocked out today (lightning) they had some issues when power was restored so they thought they'd reboot the linux files server.....it runs head less so the just yanked the power cord out.

now the 3ware raid controller says incomplete drive for both drives in the raid bios. it show no raid array as being there.

right now I just want to get the data off. is there a way to take 1 of the drives out hook it upto a good box and recover data through software?

If it's RAID 1 then both drives should contain the exact same data and be able to be accessed seperately. I know I've done that many times with RAID 1 arrays in the past. It's possible that all the data is still there and just hooking a drive up by itself will show if that's the case.

Sorry, I'm not familiar with that particular controller. I would contact 3Ware tech support. You *should* be able to recover your data, or at least the vast majority of it (it's possible that whatever it was writing at the moment they yanked the plug is gone, but everything else should be there). If there's any kind of software to do it, you'd probably have to get it from them.

Edit: Yes, and you could also just try reading the disk. Sometimes RAID controllers write RAID config data to the disk that will prevent operating systems from directly accessing it properly, though.

Most likely the controller writes some sort of extra data onto the drives, which makes the OS think it's 'unformatted' (or formatted for another kind of OS). Contact 3Ware and ask them what to do -- they built the damn thing, they should be able to point you in the right direction.

The RAID software that came with the controller/mobo should do it for you. Or you can go into the RAID BIOS and do it that way. Consult your mobo manual.
