Ahhh! HDD Problems.

Im building a computer for a friend of mine. I got some things off of newegg, including a chaintech motherboard and a 160GB maxtor drive (I wanted to keep things cheap). I can install Windows XP Home booting from CD. It recognizes the drive and everything and everything is stored alright... Then, when I reboot, it gives me the error "Error loading operating system." I tried putting a different HDD of mine in it's place, installed windows on it, and now it says "Disk Read Error Occurred. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart." Gahhh! What's going on?!
