Fsck. I got gum on the bottom of my shoe. Anybody know of anything that will dissolve it easily? I'm one floor down from the chemistry department so pretty much anything is within reach.

Peanut oil. If you don't have any use peanut butter.

Acetone

Remember, like dissolves Like... so gum is hydrophobic, and anything hydrophobic should dissolve it.

And there is always HCL...

Why am I imagining The Simpsons' episode where Lisa winds up with all sorts of crap in her hair thanks to others' friendly advice? :D

Yeah, I wanna know too. Me being an idiot, I decided to chew some gum with my retainers on...bad idea. It all was well till I gave in to the habit of pressing my tongue against the top of my mouth. This time, I had my retainer and the gum stuck to the retainer, since it doesn't excrete lubricating mucus like your mouth lining. Then, still not thinking, I tried to use my tongue to scrape the gum off. The pressure and lateral motion only resulted in the gum being smeared all across the retainer...:( I got most of it off, but there is still a thin sticky gum layer at some places.

[edit]Peanut oil sounds good, the others may work for a shoe, especially with access to a chem lab, but I don't think the results would work very well with a retainer. Any other suggestions?[/edit]

I used some acetone along with a screwdriver and got most of it off. Not sure if it was the acetone or the elbow grease doing most of the work, but it came off fairly easily.
