Ok, I have had problems with this forever... so can somebody tell me how I am supposed to log onto another Win2K machine on a LAN? Everytime I try, it tells me wrong password or something about credentials conflicting or whatever... but I just installed 2K, set up a share with no password... I am logging on how I should be... but it won't let me! I have never been able t log onto my own computer from any others either, as it always give me the same error. Networking OS my butt!

can you ping the other computer. DHCP or static IP for the computers. Guest accounts enabled? Can you see the shares?

My computer know's it's there. I can see it on the network, but it just refuses to let me on. The only thing I can think of is if there is some hidden password that nobody told me about...

ok, so we've got both rigs on the same network and they both recognize each other.

you rig has a share with no pass, thats ok. did you check the other rig to make sure his admin controls allow remote access?

in win2k there is a concept of ACL (Access Control Lists aka credentials) you dont have a domain server you have to setup an account on every box for people to get cceess, then a user will try to access a share and w2k will ask for the credntials where you will type in the account on the remote system you created. there is no concept in NT anymore of a simple password on a share, everything is done by user based or machine based authentication.

Make sure the correct settings are in the security tab also.

What user account are you trying to use to connect?

"Everyone" means every user account on the machine you're trying to get access to.
If you want everyone to have access, you need to enable the Guest account. I don't recommend doing that though. You should instead add a user and set up a password for the account. Then use that account to connect.

Ok, I added a user name on her machine that matches the one I am logged on with on my machine, but I still get the same thing. I type in the user name, no password, and it just won't let me in.

Here's the deal - when you are trying to get onto the other machine, it tries to verify the username you're using on the local computer as being one of the accounts on the remote machine... If it doesn't match one set up on the remote machine, it will prompt you for a username and password that is set up on the remote machine.

When the person told you to set up an account with the same name on the remote machine that you're using on the local machine, he was partly right - but you need to make sure that the remote machine has the same username AND password as the one you're using on the local machine and it will see you as one of the authorized users for that machine and will not prompt you for any authentication.
