I don't want to start anything crazy just looking for some info. 🙂

Anyone know where I can find articles/test results comparing performance of the intel 6xx series and the a64 in games? Just curious how they compare. Thanks.

in games, AMD has the lead. How ever, most games these days are GPU, not CPU limited, so if you go with anything above like a 3.4 P4 or a 3500+ AMD you should be fine. Price point wise, I'm fairly certain the AMD is cheaper.

AMD wins in gaming and price.

And i would also say AMD wins altogether in the 64bit category so far, as they seem to be ontop of Intel so far (may i say X2?)

the only thing the Intel really beats out at is heavy video encoding/graphics capturing and editing.

I would use pricegrabber to find the best prices for the top performing ones. I like either the socket 939 3500+ (or higher) or the socket 754 3400+ or 3700+.

Either of those three can be found for a LOT LESS then the FX-55 for example but aren't too far away in the benchmarks.

THG tests

For Doom 3, an ideal gaming benchmark, here's the rundown...

89.9 -- A64 3500 ($219)
87.8 -- P4 650 ($275)
86.8 -- A64 3200 ($190)
84.7 -- P4 640 ($213)
82.3 -- A64 3000 ($146)
81.3 -- P4 630 ($177)

Keep in mind that in this test, the P4s use DDRII-533, which is more expensive than DDR400. Also, the A64s are Winchesters, which perform about 1-2% worse than the Venices on sale nowadays. And to top it off, those Venices are superb overclockers, while P4s have throttling problems at high speeds.

lol thanks guys. I already own a 3700SD 😛 Thanks for the info though. I was just curious if the 64 bit intels compared with the a64s in the same sort of way that p4s compare to a XPs. apparently it is similar. I'll stick with my a64 till I can afford dual core. 🙂 thanks
