Ahh, the security of a UPS...

It's pouring outside. Thunder, lightning and all that jazz. My house lights are flickering, but the image displayed on the monitor is rock-solid, thanks to my UPS. I can continue doing whatever it is I'm doing for a full five minutes before it auto shuts down. That includes the box, monitor, speakers and an inkjet printer. 😀

And yes; it's an AVR UPS. 😛

What's your story? (i.e. who is at work and has the 50Kw backup diesel generator out back?)

Lemme guess, you just got it? I've got a 1200 UPS under my desk that powers my system, my server, and my two 19" CRTs.

*calmly sips drink* Heck no; I've had it for two years now. 😛 It was an even better purchase than the GF4 I bought. I love my AVR UPS.

I have a spare UPS connected to my desklamp, which has a compact fluorescent bulb in it. I've run it for an hour standalone before I decide to shut it off and go to sleep. I'm sure it can go a long ass time considering the bulb is 11W and the UPS is rated for 350VA.

It's quite nice when you're the only one with a light on and the rest of the block is pitch black.

Now that is cool. 🙂 I never thought of that...for some reason, I have always thought that UPS's don't do good w/"static loads" like lamps, fans, etc.....but I guess the PC is a static load of sorts. 🙂 Good idea!

It seems to work fine, I haven't had any problem with it. Plus low end UPSes are dirt cheap now, so why not.

I'm sure you can imagine how incredibly useful it is to have a full size working light at night when electricity is out. Flashlights aren't quite the same. 😉

I preferred my method of just plugging it in to the wal, and then when lightning strike ten feet from your house, that acrylic window emits a dazzling light show, then some smoke.

I now use a very good surge protector paired with my house's emergency generator.

Neither are candles, which I found out a few months back, after tipping an entire saucer full of hot wax onto my leg. :Q Hot wax cannot be "pushed away/off" like ants or something....it is sticky pain.

dunno, power is pretty stable here.

Not here. As long as it's not raining, not a flicker. One drop of rain out there and *blink-blink-flicker-blink* and if it rains hard, *POOF!* 🙁

Man that made me cringe. :Q

oh yeah I use a compact fluorescent because the load is much smaller than incandescent bulbs. It's like 10-20W vs 60-100W but about the same light output. And for this kind of application, the power usage matters much, much more. 😉

When I first moved in up here, the power went out practically once a week. The blackouts didn't last long, but they were annoying. Needless to say, I really valued my UPS. It has saved my ass numerous times. I bought it on a whim, too. I had a surge strip that went totally dead, and I replaced it with a UPS. It was one of the best decisions I've ever made.

Definitely is one of the BEST components you can buy. I try to get everyone I know that isn't a geek to buy one. Of course they say "UPS? I didn't order anything...did they deliver a package for me?"

And I say:

of course it hasn't been many weeks since that windstorm knocked out power for most of the day on the Eastside -- my Bellevue apartment was without power for 10 hours. 😛

That CF desk lamp + second UPS is a good idea.

i cant remember when the last time i was in a power outage that lasted for more than 10 seconds..at least a couple of years ago - Dallas & College Station, TX.

I use a 500va UPS for my notebook. 😛

Talk about "endless" neffing. 😀

And my "old" UPSes are used to "back-up" my CFLs . . . the Coleman lantern is for the really LOOONG blackouts . . . 🙂
(haven't got a generator . . . Cali power seems to be "reliable" now)
