AHH!! SOUTHBRIDGE!!

I think i cooked it. The fan died so I took it off. Oh this is an epox board.
I had a fan on my case that blows on top of the southbridge so i used that to cool it. last night that fan started dying, next thing i know my PC rebooted...and my mouse stopped working, i think my USB ports are dead. My keyboard still works!

WHAT DO I DO!!!?

The SB shouldn't have been damaged even without any cooling unless you've cranked the vdd up then it might get nuked. How hot is it to the touch? no heatsink on it?

that is your northbridge dude. the southbridge doesn't have a fan on it. if you cooked your northbridge, you would lose AGP function and your memory controller--you would be toast.

His post is confusing but the way I read it he understands USB is through the SB and thinks he damaged it by not having a case fan to cool it, but who knows 😉

The SB doesn't even get hot on my cpu.....I think the NB is the only one needing the cooling...

The Nforce2 is a different beast 😉 My SB was hot! until I added a vantec iceberg HS and now the sink is warm especially with a vdd of 1.8v.

No it is a nForce2 thing. The MCP-T southbridge has some much stuff in it now(Firewire, Dolby sound, etc...), it gets warm. BUT Nivida has said it will NOT affect performance or realability.
But I do like that some boards are coming with a small heatsink on them now, better safe than sorry 🙂

woops, it's the northbride with the heat sink.

Anyhow, my USB's still don't work at all.

Did the motherboard go bad?

I have those extra USB connections on the mobo, i wonder if those will work.

When you say you took the fan off when it died, do you mean the heatsink and fan? Taking the fan off probably wouldn't cause permanent damage, but taking the heatsink off might.
