i've been submerging it in water and denture cleaner for a very long time, then i decided to wear it today but there's some black buildup on the metal part of my lower retainer. do you guys think that listerine or soemthing would work good? i tried using my nails to scratch it off, but only managed to get most of it off.

update: ah it's because something broke off :(

i dont think it's algae. it's black and hard like concrete. could it be some sort of mineral buildup?

blah update i realized that one of the hookings of my retainers were broken off... and that black stuff was the result of the attaching the hook via torching (?) i think. ne one think it's okay to wear? it seems to fit fine right now

Pick up some efferdent or similar denture soak. You may need to do it a few times and give it a little brushing, but it will go away.

I broke my retainer once. I had to get a replacement. Now I don't even wear it.

: ) Amanda

Eh, I lost my retainer about 3 years after I got my braces off. I never got another one, and my teeth are still straight as an arrow.

I stopped wearing my retainer about 3 months after I got my braces off. I'd suffered enough torture and at that point I could have cared less whether they were crooked at all.

Replacement is hella expensive.

Yeah, my orthodontist said that my top and bottom retainers cost $200 each.

yep i replaced them once when i accidentally threw them away from my cafeteria tray... costed me about $400 for the set and that was supposedly a "discount"
