I've downloaded the latest Media Player (7.1) for my win2k machine but can't seem to view my 800meg phantom menance .avi video file.

I've gone to the "update" featuer in Media player and it says I have all the downloads and am running the most recent version of media player. Any thoughts?

You need whatever codec the movie was encoded in.

Try buying the DVD, first, though.

Me thinks you are not much better than a n00b. What if the .avi files is in I265 format? How the hell is DiVX going to play that. Not all .avi files are DiVX.

You run out and download all of the codecs that you can find; or have a program identify the codec for you. :)
