what the "tools" did was displace the water (like a rock in a glass of water), and the tools slowly work on the gunk (dissolving organic compounds) or force the clog down with increased pressure...

Which is why you don't want to stick your hand in there after you use them. 😉

Also, if you use them but they don't work and you have to pull the trap out, it's a b!tch and a half to try to remove it and catch all the drano-filled water in a bucket without getting it everywhere.

 
Do not mix any plumbing clog removers. A person was killed about 2 motnhs ago because he talked to 2 different people, and they said to use different things. He tried one, and it did not work, so he tried the other. when they mixed they created a deadly gas and killed him. his wife and his kids.

It happened at my previous job. That stuff is not a toy. Be careful.
