I'm not sure what you're talking about.

You haven't presented anything but something that isn't a direct quote and a link to the CMU web site.

Gender and ethnic backgound play a role in almost every single college. Infact, lots of colleges give more scholarship money to minorities. It isnot fair, but it is the price colleges pay to be as diverse as possible.

edit: Just to let you know, if you are asian, you have a higher chance of getting into MIT. Just a thing to think about. Conversely, if you have money, you have better chance of getting into Harvard. Hmmm....I guess Harvard is racially biased towards.....green?

So choose another school. Plainly this school is more racist that the average, do you really want to be around a bunch of racists? Or even more so have these same racists TEACH you, instill values in you?

Just find another school. Yes they are wrong, what goes around comes around. Remember this.

It seems as though he hasn't learned to form a complete argument during his time at CMU. :)

Of course not ;).

This semester, I learned to analyze circuits by hand by solving a bunch of differential equations that weren't really explained to us from the most boring professor ever. Of course, in other classes there was some interesting stuff, but that class was the "important" one for my major this semester.

I applaud the fact that CMU considers all factors equally. Explain to me how that is wrong.

Why should someone get money for being a minority? Why should someone be accepted for being a minority? What is wrong with just doing adminssions based on academic acheivement and other high school activities and the essay?

Apparently someone here filed a complaint with the Dept. of Education about being discriminated against for some scholarship, so we'll see where that goes.

Ok, I mis-interpreted your post. I thought you were advocating race and gender to be of more weight when selecting applicants.

It's not just minorities that receive "money." Whites that come from an impoverished background will also receive extra credit. This is simply to take into account the fact that the poorer you are, the increased liklihood you'll have of receiving a sub standard education.

I don't think race should be a factor. I think that when people screen applications, the name, race, and address of the applicant should be hidden so as to reduce the possibility of bias. Background should be taken into account because if you did come from an impoverished background, attended a substandard school, and still managed to do well enough to even consider applying to CMU, then those factors should be taken into account.

Of the factors listed, I have the least problem with background, because your argument is valid. But this is too often implemented by just saying "black = bad background", "white = good background", when this is obviously not necessarily the case.

Yes. It's because people are lazy and want easy solutions to problems. Like I said, the race, name, and address should not be made available to the people screening the applications. People have been turned down for things just because their name sounded black. By not having the name, there would really be no way to tell what race the applicant is. Presumably, if you have to write an essay and you are applying to CMU, you'll be using standard english and no slang, so there would be know way to guess about the applicants race from the essay either.
