Hi,
I've been having issues with drives on AHCI. A couple of weeks ago I bought a new Intel SSD 80GB. Worked fine for a couple of days, but then I experienced some weird errors. I figured Windows went haywire, I thought I might have installed a wrong driver or something. Upon reboot, the disk woudn't initialize. I figured that explained the issues I was having, I took it back to the shop and brought home a new one.
It worked fine for a couple of days and now the same weird errors are back. I wanted to reinstall but I got errors expanding files from the DVD. After a few tries it installed again, but then files copied from CD got corrupt. After another few reboots this new drive now won't initialize either.
I went into the BIOS and changed AHCI to IDE Enhanced mode, and to my surprise the disk worked fine again.
Next I disconnected everything I didn't need, removed all memory except 1 bank and hooked up my old and trusty WD Raptor 74GB. I left it on IDE Enhanced, booted the Windows DVD, wiped the disk and it installed just fine. No problems in Windows either.
I change IDE mode back to AHCI, reboot the DVD and install it again. Wipe the disk etc. It installs, but when it rebooted this disk won't initialize (!!). I'm at a loss ....
Since AHCI supports hotplug, I boot the pc without the disk hooked, wait for the BIOS to pass and hook up the drive when it is waiting for the DVD to boot. The drive spins up and Windows DVD boots. When I select the partition to install it on it comes up with the following message:
So now I'm stuck with 2 disks that won't initialize in AHCI mode but seem to work fine in IDE mode, and I am at a loss.
I have cleared the CMOS several times.
I have ran Memtest+ 4.0 on all DIMMS in single and dual channel mode -> no faults
I have ran Prime95 for countless hours -> no faults
I have ran several harddrive tools (Intel, Seagate) and inspected SMART status -> no faults.
Mainboard: Asus P5QL Pro BIOS 1004.
Official Windows 7 Pro x64 DVD
Hardware replaced since yesterday in an attempt to resolve the issue:
Intel SSD 80GB --> WD Raptor 74GB
2x WD Caviar 500GB --> 2 x Seagate 1,5TB (these drives were on my list to replace anyway and both had a number of sectors relocated and read errors).
Sony 7200S DVD drive --> Samsung SATA DVD drive.
SATA cables
Please if anyone have any tips I can try to resolve the issue it would be greatly appreciated. I'm at complete loss as to what could be wrong here.
Thanks.
