AHCI New computer

I bought my parents a Dell Optiplex 780 and when I went into the BIOS I noticed that the drive was in RAID mode. There is only one hard disk. I switched it to AHCI which it should have been in and I couldn't boot Windows. So I reenabled what it was set at, i.e RAID.

So my question is: Do you have to have AHCI mode on before you install the OS for it to work? The simple fact that when I turned off RAID and turned on AHCI I couldn't boot to the OS which tells me this is true.

Windows 7 Home Premium 64.

You need to enable the AHCI windows driver before you can turn on AHCI. Normally this is done when you install Windows, but you CAN do it after the fact with a very easy registry change. The same thing happens if you are set to AHCI and try to turn on RAID.
