AHCI and Hot-Swap

I recently went through this guide to get AHCI working on a P5Q SE/R, which uses a ICH10R chip. After trying several wrong configurations, I was finally able to set the BIOS to AHCI and boot into the OS - Windows Server 2003.

I was wanting AHCI so I could do hot swapping for backup drives, but after I have AHCI setup, it doesn't look like it's giving me the option since the "Optimize for Quick Removal" is greyed out. I also installed the Intel Matrix Storage Console, but it isn't giving me any options as it does this machine here. I can see the "Intel(R) ICH10R SATA AHCI Controller" under "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers" in the Device Manager, though.

Is there something I am missing, or that I did wrong?

I had a similar problem and couldn't solve it with AHCI alone. I started using HotSwap! and it took care of it. Good little app, don't let the crappy website fool you.

Can't say that you won't be able to solve it, but this is an easy way to go.

Wouldn't that be because the ICH-R is handling the cache. You can turn off write-back cache from the Storage Manager, but that hoses speed.

I do not know how much blame can be put on the OS, but using same drivers and chipsets AHCI works like a charm under Windows 7. With the same chipsets and disks I used to have similar issues under XP and Vista.

Yes, it successfully removes the drive.
