Does anyone have any experience with this case: Ahanix Plasma.

I'm looking for a replacement case for my server (mAtx) and I'm pretty impressed with Ahanix's cases. This particular case is only $35 at Newegg

-Thanks

Like most Ahanix cases, the Plasma looks very nice on the outside (that door action is slick!), but is pretty pedestrian inside with none of the newer features like screwless or rail type drive mounts, or rubber noise isolators for HDs, etc. But it doesn't look like it would be too hard to mod for isolators.
. It does have an unusual no. of drive bays for a micro case.
. The front and rear fan mounts are only 80mm, but not many micro cases offer better. Once again, you could probably mod in a blow hole and maybe a side door intake as well. And the rear may be graunchable to 92mm. I'd probably buy it for the cosmetic bling alone...

Those are good things. I hate rails and I hate screwless mounts. That just more parts that can vibrate. Rubber grommets are cool, but my seagates don't make any noise to begin with. Also being that this is just to be my server I don't keep the newest boiling parts in it. In fact I keep the coolest parts possible in there and I don't remove and replace parts too often either. The door is necessary to keep my children from pushing things and also keep me from having to do crazy work to modify my drives for looks. I think that at $45 after s/h that I"m just going to get it. If for some reason I hate it, oh well, it's not much money anyway.

I haven't worked with the new Ahanix cases, but the edges are fricken sharp. You will cut yourself!

thanks for the warning but this case is pretty new and according to the information on it, it has "Twice rounded chassis".

That case is slick! It's probably one of the only cases with a door that I would consider since it slides out of the way. The 80mm fan mounts are actually pretty nice for a microatx case. Many only come with 60mm fans.

"Plasma is one of best designed MINI CASE. Sliding front door is very convenient open style.
Also it features basically 2 USB ports on the front panel."

I wonder if they'd hire me as a part-time tech writer?

I do not have experience with this case. But I can say my Sonata's blue LED's in front are bright enough, that since I can see the front of the case from through the door into the other room, hile I'm trying to get to sleep, that I have to occasionally prop a book or something else in front of it to block the light. This thing looks like HAL - just something to consider - are you OK that it looks like it might light up a whole room?

yes tracerbullet the light isn't a problem for me. I have a dedicated office at home that this will be in that is nowhere near any of the bedrooms in the house. I just ordered this one and can't wait to get it.

thanks for the replys guys.

well I have the case and it is actually a bit disappointing.

First of all the case looks pretty cool. It's smaller than my previous atx mid tower, though not as small as my wife's mAtx case. This is offset by better airflow and space for more drives. The "plasma" bubble in the front is pretty cool, though I've yet to see it be purple as the pics suggest. It's blue when it's on and it's bright blue when the hdd is being accessed. The sliding door on the case is pretty cool but has it's drawbacks too.

Now for the bad part. The quality of this case is horrible. It's what I would have expected to get 8 years ago when purchasing a case. The side panels are flimsy and buckle back and forth. When put together the seems don't all line up as they should and there are some large spaces where there shouldn't be. The rounded edges are not in all places and even then are done poorly.

So how about that sliding door on front? Well it's pretty cool looking though when you have it fully open and pushed back on the side, it doesn't stay flush with the case. It would be nice if there was a magnet back there to hold it to the case instead of have it dangle out. The magnet used to hold it closed when it's shut is also pretty weak. It does do a good job of hiding my mismatched drives, so I'm happy about that.

I'd prefer if the colors of the case were reversed and the thickness of the steel was higher. It seems like they tried to get the weight of an aluminum case without the aluminum. $45 is a resonable price for this, so expect a $45 case if you purchase this.

Most of these problems won't bother me too much as this is just my server and will sit in the back of the room or in a closet without being messed with much, but I don't recommend the case for the majority of the people on this forum. It's too bad for ahanix too because I was really looking into getting one of their htpc cases but that probably won't happen now.

Here's the one pic I took of this case in comparison to my workstation mid ATX case. case

Dang, sorry to hear that, Bookie. I was hoping it wouldn't be TOTAL crap. I have a Nikao X-Jazz case that's basically crap (aside from looking cool). It does the job as far as a case goes, but it's less than pleasant to work in. Fortunately it's a bedroom computer that doesn't get many things tweaked. :)

Feel like taking any more pics? I'd trust yours more than I'd trust Ahanix's now. :)

alright so i lied. Here are the pics tonight. Including a small video to show the flimsyness of the case.

interior
outside showing how the door doesn't always stay flat against the case
outside with the door positioned correctly
front looking good
closeup of usb ports and cover. The bottom button there does actually go through and push the power button under it.
full view inside
closeup inside

Here's a video of me shaking the side panel to show how flimsy it is. The motherboard tray is the worse, the side panels are the next worse. Video (quicktime) 1.7 megs

What I've done so far:
I put a panaflo intake in front of the harddrives, though I'm not sure where it will actually get air to take in. Oh well.
Thumbscrews all around.
Panaflo on processor (1800+), remember this is just a server for very little traffic (web, sql, file)

What's left to do
Add another one of my panaflos on the back to pull air out
clean up cabling (one of the harddrives will eventually be removed.

I'm trying to keep this thing up as much as possible because I do have half a dozen website hosted on it, so what I've done so far has been very rushed.

All pictures and video care of my incredible Minolta DiMage A1.

I've seen a bunch of Ahanix cases that my friend's bought and they are some of the cheapest crap i've come across! They look nice in the pictures and some of them look nice in reality, but the front panels are so damn cheap they break off easily. If people knew that they probably wouldn't buy Ahanix cases, but looks sell so they get a good grade on that. (let me say the dvine cases are built well, but not their tower cases).

thanks jagr. I have been interested in the dvine cases for a while but thought I'd try out ahanix with this cheap case. I think i'll have to find a way to actually see a dvine in person before dropping that kind of money on one of those cases.

That case reminds me so much of my Nikao X-Jazz as far as construction goes. The side panels of the X-Jazz were equally as flimsy. I added some generic sound dampening material to alleviate this somewhat. I suppose a magnet could be added to hold the door in the open position.

Does it take a fullsize ATX PSU? This case might be good for me after all, since those types of cases are rare.

Bookie, I think the DVine cases are fine. They are of decent quality. It's just the towers Ahanix sells for cheap. Those are the ones to stay away from.
