Very old thread revived by Rich K. Moved from OT.

I think that I may have posted this in another thread a few weeks back, but I had been hearing this clunking/rattling noise coming from the back of my trunk for the past thousand miles or so. It's been really pissing me off b/c everytime I would go over a bump, I'd hear the noise. My first reaction was to check to see what was loose in the trunk, and there wasn't anything in there. I checked the spare tire jack and made sure it was secure. I secured the rod that you stick into the jack. I screwed down the spare tire extra tight to be safe. Still heard the noise. So I completely removed the jack and the rod. Still hear the noise. I've tried locking the rear seats and riding with them up and down. Still heard the noise.

Well, I finally got fed up and took it to the Toyota dealer and told them what problems I was having. They said that they would take it in the back and look over it. 'bout 30 mins later they come back and basically say "Mr. Hill, your struts and mounts are TOTALLY screwed, you need them replaced RIGHT AWAY...oh by the the way, that's gonna run you $700"

SEVEN HUNDRED DOLLARS!!!!! HELL FUGGIN' NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I got on the phone and started calling junk yards and found one nearby that has the whole strut/support apparatus for $75 per side. I then went to Autozone and picked up a '92-'96 Camry Haynes Repair Manual. So Monday, I'm gonna go pickup the parts and my dad and I are gonna rip out the rear seat and replace the struts.

SEVEN HUNDRED DOLLARS!!!!!!!!!!??????? SCREW YOU GUYS! :D

You will learn about the expense of fixing your 'better quality than domestic' foreign branded autos.

If you cannot do the work yourself the repair bills are astronomical compared to your everyday 'American' car.

How many miles are on your Camry? Usually the parts you are replaceing will last at least 100,000 miles.

I did the same a few months back - not an a camry though. wasn't too tough and plus since it is the rear you should have to worry about the alignment:)

How much it cost for them to diagnose it?
Free. I've got a friend that works at the Toyota dealership and he just made the $29 diagnostic fee "disappear" :p

Last time we tried that, I had my car in the service bay up on the lift and he was looking at it. The service coordinator came back and chewed his ass out

She basically told him that she didn't care if he was working on his own car or a car that wasn't a Toyota...but since my car was a Toyota they wouldn't be making huge $$$ from the parts and labor.

Dont buy your struts from a junkyard, you will regret it. Go to your local parts store and find out how much new struts cost.

Also, on some (all?) cars, when you mess with the struts you will need an alignment. Just be glad it is the rear struts you are working on.

Plus I would need the mounts too which are $46 for a set.

So $76 * 2 + $46. I'll try autozone

You've got a spring compressor, right? You'll need something to compress the coil springs when you change the struts.

ZV

EDIT: The dealership also said you needed new struts. A strut should _only_ be bought new. Plan on at least $100 per corner for new struts.

Yes, don't settle for used struts.

You can get quality aftermarket OEM replacements for about $65 each.

OK. That's the big tool that will catch a lot of people who try to do this thing on their own. I'd kill to have access to a good shop like your father seems to have. Oh well, my kids (the hypothetical kind) won't have that same problem. :) I hope it goes well for you. It definitely is less expensive to do your own work though. More fun too, nice driving a car that you fixed yourself.
