Ah, yes, let's rail against the cultural imperialists who are against rape

I laughed out loud when I read that one.

Have you ever listened to the song that was quoted involving DMX and his mention of rape? The song wasn't intended to glorify rape. Again, he was telling a story, graphic maybe, but a story. He wasn't calling on his listeners to do anything illegal or harmful to women.

Watch the general's daughter and tell me if you think everyone involved with that movie is a bad person because the movie deals with rape.

Rap maybe a little darker than some mainstream music, but none the less it is expression. For as long as I can remember there have been books, movies, poems and various forms of expression that have dealt with violence. The way you choose to interpret those expressions is up to you. Do not make up your mind about anything that you don't have the knowledge to judge.

appopin: Gee, and I thought "Elite Member" meant that you could post more than something correcting spelling. Nice contribution to the discussion, now FuOff if that's all you have to say.

That's one of those words which I've always misspelled. Incidentally, I had it spelled correctly and changed it. Go figure.

As for limited exposure to rap, why would I want to subject my ears to that crap? My neighbors are kind enough to rattle my windows from their cars. It's funny -- you never hear Mozart or Wagner blasted at that volume.

classy: Fine, expand the discussion to other types of music. I have no problem with that. The fact of the matter is that there is a SIGNIFICANT portion of the rap "music" catalog that caters to violence, hatred, etc. I will freely admit that Marilyn Manson is equally repulsive. "Death" metal? Kill them if they are so obssessed with it. I don't consider something which merely has shock value to be art. Shock is easy to produce; artistic talent only comes as a gift, with inspiration, or with work.

I also don't consider something produced by machine to be "music". While I will admit that there are some talented lyricists who happen to write rap "lyrics", there are plenty out there who only have a rudimentary understanding of meter and can put garbage in metered lines to fit the Casio beat. Simply because something is "angry" doesn't suddenly make it noteworthy or laudable. Not all that is called art is good.

Now, as some have implied, I would not favor censorship and also do not see rap as the rudimentary cause of the evils in society. Such hyperbole is only a diversion from the issue that some rap, along with some other genres of music, just has no redeeming value in terms of artistic quality or aesthetic beauty. It's crap. Some of it spreads ridiculous messages which, when presented in other forms, would be considered hate speech and subject to boycotts, derision, and lawsuits. Simply because it is contained within the context of computer generated noise does not suddenly render it valuable.

Where does the blame lie? I suppose it should be with the record companies who furnish the money to these people. Also, we could level blame at the retailers who make it available. The lust for profit without regard to good taste (to nip the criticism before it starts: is rape good taste?) should stop somewhere. Parents are responsible for their kids, but everyone is responsible for our society as a whole.

Heh, just as I'm posting this, Public Enemy came up on my random Winamp playlist. 🙂 Anyway...

<< Some of it spreads ridiculous messages which, when presented in other forms, would be considered hate speech and subject to boycotts, derision, and lawsuits. >>

Good point Andrew. Considering how passionately classy hates white supremacists and their hate speech, he seems to be rather accepting of what many people consider hate speech, just because he considers it music. Selective compassion, eh?

Finally, thank you. I agree with the majority of your post, except where the blame lies. Eminem's last album sold 7 million copies. No record exec in his right mind is gonna pull the plug on that. Because, as Wu-Tang said "CREAM - cash rules everything around me"

Now, the real issue to address, is why do people want to listen to him(eminem)? Lots of you are saying shock value, but I don't think so. I can walk in on my mom in the shower and shock the hell out of myself whenever I want for free. There's lots more shocking stuff out there as any of you who have been on the internet long enough know. So why did 7 million people in the US alone buy something that so many of you consider to be total garbage?

Because the shock value is not for themselves. You seeing your mom nekkid only shocks the two of you, some 18 year old in a Civic blasting Eminem shocks the whole damned world.

And for those of you who ARE the 18 year old in the Civic, get off of it already. The looks we give you? They can be interpreted as "You're a fvcking idiot. And your car is ass-ugly. And your music sucks, except that I'm getting wood from the vibrations."

Viper GTS

Viper, if you belive the only purpose is to shock the general public, then why don't you and I produce an album on which I yell "FU*K" repeatedly for ~74 mins? You can lay some beatz down on your casio drum machine and we'll be millionaires.

There's more to it.

SmiZ

You and I both know that CD would sell extremely well with a little bit of marketing. All it would take is little blurbs in magazines and newspapers about how offensive it is and it would disappear off shelves.

<< So why did 7 million people in the US alone buy something that so many of you consider to be total garbage? >>

Because they have not been taught the value of real art!!!!!!!!

fetts:

That's where the parenting comes in. 😀

You don't want your kids listening to this music? Then give them a reason not to. (not "don't make me come over there&quot😉
Discuss with them the topics, the lyrics, and learn about it yourself.

If your kid is listening to this type of music, as much as you think it's all about bad words and loud bass, sit down and listen to it, or at least read lyrics, see if you can find a message in there. Don't automatically assume that they listen to something just because they don't know any better. Maybe, just maybe, you should look into it before you condemn it. How do you feel about people who think anyone who knows anything about computers is a complete nerd?

<edit> typo's </edit>

"And your music sucks, except that I'm getting wood from the vibrations."

LMMFAO!!! I don't know if I enjoy any kind of music that much, Viper. 😉

We could probably sum this entire thread up into a quote you probably all have heard before: "To each, his own."

The thing is, I don't understand why certain people feel the need to label something as "crap" for the sole reason of having a particular dislike for it.

Mozart or Beethoven, The Beatles or Elvis... while these artists may be considered "good" music to others, that doesn't necessarily mean that it is "good" music. Hell, I wouldn't want to listen to any of those for an extended period of time.

Something like OutKast or 2Pac, though, I could listen to for hours. I'm not even sure why. I'm a middle class, white collar, married, 23-year-old, caucasian male. (Damn, I just stereotyped myself!) There's just something about it that speaks to me.

Who'd a thunk it? 🙂

See if you can find a message in there

We can see the message. And we see that it's not a message we want our children to hear.

Viper GTS

Viper:

If your children don't wanna listen, then you're all set. But if by chance they do, before you ground them for a year, find out why they want to listen. I would be interested in knowing.

That Elvis guy is pretty shocking. Make sure that the camera doesn't catch the lewd motions of his hips.

Michael

To single out rap is nonsense. For all you people who think rap is just so bad and you would never let your kids listen to it and as one person put it "rap" in her neighborhood ain't normal, is this rock music normal.............................

Marilyn Manson Lyrics
These are a couple of his less violent lyrics. He is one of the top new age /rock stars. All his concerts sell out. He is often protested wherever he performs.

Irresponsible Hate Anthem

I am so all-american, I'd sell you suicide
I am totalitarian, I've got abortions in my eyes
I hate the hater, I'd rape the raper
I am the animal who will not be himself
F^ck it
Hey victim, should I black your eyes again?
Hey victim,
you were the one who put the stick in my hand
I am the ism, my hate's a prism
let's just kill everyone and let your god sort them out
f^ck it
Everybody's someone else's great person/I know you are so am I
I wasn't born with enough middle fingers/
I don't need to choose a side
I better, better, better, better not say this
better, better, better, better not tell
I hate the hater, I'd rape the raper
I am the idiot who will not be himself
F^ck it
(chorus)

User Friendly

Use me when you want to come
I've bled just to have your touch
When I'm in you I want to die
User friendly f^cking dopestar obscene
Will you die when you're high
You'd never die just for me
She says,
I'm not in love, but I'm gonna f^ck you
'til somebody better comes along.
Use me like I was a whore
Relationships are such a bore
Delete the ones that you've f^cked
User friendly f^cking dopestar obscene
Will you die when you're high
You'd never die just for me
She says,
I'm not in love, but I'm gonna f^ck you
'til somebody better comes along.

Rock Group Tool
These are from one of the hottest Rock groups in America. They are so popular Ozzy Ozbourne wanted them for his tour called OZZFEST. Their lyrics are worse than even gangsta rap. I am only going to post this one, because they are beyond awful.

Jerk-Off

Someone told me once
that there's a right and wrong,
and that punishment
would come to those
who dare to cross the line.

But it must not be true
for jerk-offs like you.
Maybe it takes longer to catch a total a$$hole.
but I'm tired of waiting.
Maybe it's just bullsh^t and I should play GOD,
and shoot you myself.
Because I'm tired of waiting.

Consequences dictate
our course of action
and it doesn't matter what's right.
It's only wrong if you get caught.
If consequences dictate
my course of action
I should play GOD
and shoot you myself.
I'm very tired of waiting.

I should
kick you,
beat you,
f^ck you,
and then shoot you in your f^cking head.

Now it doesn't look like rap music is the only music with a problem. Tool has got a song called Prison Sex. Yea, you guessed, its about sodomy. This ain't nothing. There are some seriously bad bands in rock now. And your kids are probably listening to them. Just like these 2 "wonderful" acts. I suggest while your looking to see what "rap" tapes your kids got, you better look at all the tapes. The only music that doesn't have this problem is country. Now if I want to cry the blues, while riding in a pickup truck, slopping down beer and shine, I guess this might be your thing. To me country music is good. Good for nothing, that is. I hate it. Sorry if that offends, oh well. But guess what my wife loves that stuff. lol 🙂

One day we got in the car and she had on her country station. Well I turned it of course. I looked at her and said "Have you ever looked at Me" She said what do you mean. Well if you look at me and listen to country music somewhere something seems to be out of whack 😉. She laughed and said yea, your the wrong color. hehehehehehehehehe

Bober Fett
Public Enemy was one of my favorite groups of all time. Their album "It Takes a Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back" was all that, boy!!!!!!!!!!! The song Man Of Steel would make you want to beat a white person down. lol But you know what, I stop listening to them. The music was still banging, but the lyrics were just to much for me. I ain't into that hate thing. That wasn't me then or now. But since I have been talking to you, I am going to look for that tape and try to get refreshed. LOL!!!!!! That ain't me though. hehehehehehehe I still don't like your punk A$$ though.

But there is bad music all over. But as usual the Media which controls the minds of people focuses on "rap" music. Hmmm........I wonder why...

<< Stupid, banal syrupy sh*t. >>

Now that really sounds like Chess9 is condemning Country and Western (as well as rap).

AndrewR, it appears you now have some misconceptions about Elite Members AND rap. You caught my spelling correction but missed the entire point of my post(s).
