Weasel words give the force of authority to a statement w/anonymous sources.

For example, Some people say Montreal is the nicest city in the world.

who are these "some people"?

Weasel words just spread hearsay, or couch personal opinion in vague, indirect syntax.

Ah.. now i can put a term to this practice.
 
It should be noted that while in some situations this should be avoided, but it is widely regarded that sometimes that's only one side of the story.
