<< Man takes deputy's gun, fires way out of hospital
Nude, he steals car in West Bend, gets to Cedarburg before being shot, caught, police say.
Confronted by a naked, gun-wielding carjacking suspect who had just shot his way out of a West Bend hospital, authorities captured the man Sunday afternoon behind a Cedarburg nursing home by bringing him down with a load of buckshot to his bare buttocks.
Just how a nude man armed with a deputy's stolen pistol ended up in a field not far from thousands of shoppers hunting for bargains at Cedarburg's Maxwell Street Days was a bizarre tale that easily could have ended tragically, police said.
"This was a very dangerous situation," Cedarburg Police Chief Thomas Frank said. "We are very fortunate to have him back in custody and that no one else was injured."
Before the episode ended shortly before 2 p.m., the 24-year-old man reportedly wrestled a gun away from a Washington County sheriff's deputy, fired several shots in St. Joseph's Community Hospital, including shooting off his leg shackles, lost his hospital gown in the ensuing fracas, and carjacked a Cadillac.
Authorities picked up his trail in the stolen Cadillac, chased him to crowded downtown Cedarburg and followed him on foot through a nursing home, where he fired another shot, before officials finally arresting the still-naked man.
Washington County Sheriff Jack Theusch has spent the last 32 years in law enforcement and had never seen an escape as strange as this one.
"I'm sure it's happened in other places, but I've never seen someone be able to break out of his leg irons," Theusch said. "But he got them off by shooting them off.
"Usually, when you have those on someone, you've got them pretty well shackled."
Here's what happened, authorities said:
On Friday, the man was arrested after a bank robbery in Washington County. While his suspected accomplice was captured, the man drove to Milwaukee, where officers nabbed him after he smashed his car near North Ave. and Sherman Blvd.
Sent to St. Joseph's Community Hospital on Saturday to recover from heroin withdrawal, the man hatched his escape plan Sunday, when he asked the deputy guarding him if he could use the bathroom. Inside the bathroom, the man took out his IV and tried to stab the veteran deputy with the needle.
In the struggle, the man choked the deputy and stole her gun.
"She may have lost consciousness and when she came to, he had her weapon," Theusch said.
Hospital employees heard the struggle and ran into the hospital room, where the man was briefly disarmed before he got the gun back. He fired three shots, taking the time to shoot off his leg irons.
The naked man ran out of the hospital and within minutes carjacked a Cadillac a few blocks away. West Bend police quickly sent out a description of the stolen car.
A few minutes later, the Cadillac was seen blowing through a stop sign at the intersection of Highway G and Paradise Driveon West Bend's south side. Then an Ozaukee County sheriff's deputy heading north on Highway NN saw the car speeding in the other direction.
The deputy turned around and chased the Cadillac into Cedarburg's shopping district, which was filled with bargain hunters. A Cedarburg police detective tried to block the Cadillac on Washington Ave.
"The detective, certain the suspect was going to hit him and fearing for his life, pulled into a parking lot to avoid a collision," Frank said.
The suspect then steered the speeding Cadillac east on Lincoln Blvd., where he hit a car and then a railroad crossing signal. The car eventually ended up in the front yard of Cedar Springs Health and Rehabilitation Center in Cedarburg.
The naked man hopped out, fired a shot that struck the outside of the nursing home and ran into the facility. He sprinted out the back and was finally captured in a partially wooded area, where he was shot in the buttocks.
The man was still hospitalized late Sunday after surgery at St. Mary's Hospital-Ozaukee in Mequon, although his injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.
Police expected to seek charges including multiple counts of attempted homicide, endangering safety and carjacking. >>
What is this world coming to, its getting more amusing every minute.
