Ah, something is killing my cat5 cables!

I was playing some Diablo 2 today, got lagged. I thought well that's just the everyday get disconnected from battle.net. Nope my internet was down. But then I checked and it seemed that my cable modem was working fine and in ipconfig it said cable disconnected. So I replaced the cat5 cable and after it worked again I just thought that that 3yr old cable had died somehow.

2 hours after replacing it I'm packing some more D2 and bam disconnected. Thought it was bnet again until nothing else worked. Argh same thing!

I was down to my last cat5 cable but I took out my 3com nic and used the D-link one I got. I hope it was just that stupid $55 3com nic that was killing the cable somehow and not my cable modem. Otherwise I don't expect this last cable to last long and it'd be at least a week until my crap ISP gets their asses out here and gives me a new modem.

Anyone have a similar experience? Is it the nic or the cable modem that's somehow wrecking my cat5 cables?

/me goes back to playing D2 because my time could be short. 😀

Uh, I have pulled cat 5 over huge turns and through corners, ran it in lenghts longer than speced, and never had 2 die in 1 day. Methinks something else is wrong, and by the time you change the cat5, it is back to working.

Is your cable ghetto or professional?

Ghetto or professional?

Hmm I have no idea.

Well this one has been working for over 2 hours so many the nic was somehow wrecking it. I was thinking maybe it was sending too high of a signal or something (??? i have no idea just guessing) and the cable crapped out.

The data goes over either 4 stranded or 4 sold copper wire. I bet you could plug the wire into a wall socket and use as an extension cord 😉 Okay maybe not, but its pretty decent guage cable. No WAY a nic could burn it out.
