About 3 weeks ago, my NEC EA231WMi randomly died. Like, DIED died. It literally starting audibly arcing as the screen flickered. Who knows what the problem was, but I wasn't about to crack that one open to find out.
Anyway, I contacted NEC who offered a refurb'd replacement. I had to pay shipping to them, but the shipped the replacement back to me for free. Overall, it wasn't as smooth of a process as my Dell 2408WFP was (Dell pays shipping both ways and sends you a new monitor before you have to send the old one back), but at least they held up their end. It did come loosely packed with a thin layer of dust on the base, and there were a few smudges on the screen which I wasn't happy about. Oh well, at least it doesn't smell like cigars, and there are no dead pixels.
So why did I take the time to write this? THE COLORS! I didn't realize quite how washed out the 2408WFP looked until I hooked up the NEC and calibrated it. I am missing the screen size and the vertical real estate a bit, as well as the pearly whites on the Dell, but man, the NEC completely blows it out of the water in every other category. Not to mention it gives off about half as much heat, possibly less.
Once again, I'm not happy the first monitor died and I'm not 100% thrilled about the RMA process, but I am thoroughly impressed with this monitor, considering the price. I believe Dell has a 23" e-IPS monitor out now, and if it uses the same panel as the EA231WMi, I highly suggest taking a look.
