visgf and I were car shopping the other day and found this:

2000 GMC Jimmy, 2 door SLS trim - LOADED with about every option besides leather.

We can walk out the door with it for a little over $24,000 and 3.9% financing. I can also defer my payment for 90 days so I can sell my car privately and get more $$ for it.

Sharp looking truck, but I never would have thought I'd be considering it.

Not a bad choice. I've always lived SUV's, even before they became the "dustbuster van" replacement for soccer moms. They're large enough to be safe, but not so big they drink gas like water. The Jimmy's have a pretty comfy ride as well.

My girlfriend has a bad back, and if she says that the seats are comfortable, then they really are She was happy with it.

I also do a lot of driving and hauling of things for work, so the space is nice, and the ride was fairly pleasant for it being basically a truck. They only real downside is the fact that it does get about 9 miles less a gallon than my current vehicle. But, it doesn't take premium fuel like all of the alternatives that we were looking at.

We also are really thinking of going with it because we have no family in the area and thus have no pickup trucks handy. If we need to move something big, we need chase down a neighbor or call my parents up and have them drive 2 hours to come help us. We plan on buying some furniture in a couple months and this will come in very hand when that time comes as well.

Also, in 5 or 6 years when we go to get rid of it, we should be able to nab a fairly decent resale value.

yakko, the utility in Sport Utility Vehicle.

The Jimmy is within $50 a month of the Golf, and the Audi got tossed out when I met the hard realization that I couldn't stick a 17" monitor w/ box in the trunk.

Also, with the 3.9% financing I'm not getting butt raped on interest. Not to mention that the resale on the SUV should be considerably higher than the golf.

Plus, the GM college grad program allows me to defer my payment for 90 days. In this time I can probably get an extra 2k more out of my current vehicle by selling it outright since I have 90 days to get rid of before I start making double car payments.

Also, here in Iowa, our liscense plates are based on a value of your car if you have a car, or a flat rate if you have a truck. If I bought a 22k car, my yearly plates would be over 300 a year, with the Jimmy, I'm probably looking at around 150.

At this point in time, it just worked out to be the best option.

I haven't signed any papers yet, so I still have the option to back out. I've got a pretty firm figure set in my head, and if the dealer won't take it, I'm walking out.

Oh...and it's my girlfriends favorite vehicle so far

Have you seen the resale values of VWs lately? Holy crap! Even cars that did bad, are now rising in value(Corrado, MKII Jetta, Golf). Forget the Golf, forget the Jetta, and please forget the Jimmy. Have you considered the Passat GLS Wagon? It'll carry everything for your LAN meet, plus it's sporty considering it's a wagon.

Now that I've reread your post, and read that you're considering a 2Door Jimmy...I still say get a wagon!

IBhacknU, whenever I travel for work, I only have to travel 5 miles to make up for one gallon of gas.

SuperGroove, I did take both the Passat GLS wagon, and the GLX wagon w/ the 4motion out for a spin.

Two problems though -
1) price - about 6k more for the options that I'd want
2) the most uncomfortable seats I've ever sat in. They just did not hit me right at all. Just from the 10 mile loop that I drove it, my back was sore. Other than the seats though, I thought that it was an EXCELENT vehicle, I just couldn't stand to sit in it

Oh, and if I did opt for the 4motion, for starters, it would be 4k-6k more than the Jimmy, I'd have another 3k more in interest payments, and the gas milage would only be two or three more miles to the gallon higher than the Jimmy.

The 2 door will be a pain in the @ss compared to a 4 door. Any deals to be had on a 4 dr? I think the 2 door also has a shorter wheelbase which means less room overall for carrying stuff.
