Ah, finished reading LotR for the 20th time.

I have read all the books about once a year since I was 11. It never gets old. This was my first time since the movies came out though, it was interesting to see how much they moved dialog and story elements around. The movies used dialog lines sometimes hundreds of pages out of place, and even changed who spoke the words. Plus I had forgotten how much I love the Scouring chapter, when Sam really kicks some ass 😉 Rosie telling him he "wasted a year" cracks me up. "Well I wouldn't say wasted!" hehe poor Sam.

I would say that the movies are a definite improvement when it comes to drama but you can't beat Tolkein's prose. Some of his writing is just so beautiful.

the battles are certainly better in the movies imo. tolkein just glanced over them iirc.

POSSIBLE SPOILERS:

and didn't helm's deep end differently than in the 2 towers?

and didn't elrond reforge elendil before the fellowship left rivendell?

/SPOILERS

i love those books.

Other books do exist..

How can you spend so much time on a single series of books when there's millions of other books to read? I mean.. doesn't it ever get boring to know completely what will happen before you read it?

have you ever watched a movie more than once?

have you ever read lotr?

i probably won't read them again but i have to say i do "miss" the characters in the books.

Yes i agree. I miss them right now.. But yeah, there are other books to read. Reading LOTR every year is a bit excessive.

well I read new stuff all the time so it's no big sacrifice to spend a few weeks reading LotR. certainly there are some parts that I find boring (Bombadil & the old forest, many of the poems and songs, some flower/landscape descriptions) but overall it is just a work of art that I don't get tired of appreciating.

In TTT it was Erkenbrand, not Eomer, that Gandalf arrived with 'just in time'. Other than that the movie (extended) is pretty close to the book.

Elendil was Isildur's father, but yes Anduril was reforged before they left.

I've read every one of John Grisham's books like 50x already. I remember someone calling his books, "for lazy people" or something because you can skip practically every other page and still know exactly what's going on, and I think that's very accurate 🙂 No one I know really reads books, and I'm very indecisive, so someone recommend another author to me besides Tom Clancy and John Grisham

i love those books.

1) Elves don't show up to help and the humans aren't quite so outnumbered, but the situation was still desperate. In the book, Gandalf finds Eomer and brings his army to help, but he also gets a bunch of hurons
(think ents but more wild...like say a pet dog and a wolf) to help destroy the orc army. Together they crush the orcs.

2) No...Elendil was the first king of Gondor. Elrond had his elves reforge Narsil, the sword that cut the ring from Sauron's hand, as Anduril before they left Rivendell.

Other books like Eye of the World that I have to read from book I annually so I can understand what happens in the most recent released book. It is starting to get old and I have learned to SKIM the boring parts.

Wow...can't imagine spending that much time reading the same book over and over. I have read a book or two twice to make sure I have digested everything...but 20 times...wow. Can you quote entire chapters?

The March of the Ents is also a bit different in the book. In the book, the Ents reroute a river which is a little more impressive than just breaking a dam. 😀

i like the hobbit the best so far, but have yet to finish reading LOTR

(i read it about 10 years ago and forgot much of what was in it)

I've read them once (actually stopped mid way through book 3 for some reason), but I've never been one to read something twice. I don't often watch movies more than once, except for ones I really like.

Damn Skoorb I was just about to post the same thing. I read the first 2.5 books about 15 years ago (then school started and I had to read something for English, so I stopped reading the last part of the last book since I hate reading two books simulataneously). I thought I was the only one to read that far and not finish it. I just watched the movies this weekend to see how it ended. I never, ever watch a movie twice - I'd especially never read a book twice. Too many good books, too many entertaining movies to do repeats.

i've read the chamber as well as listened to it on tape. just did a report on him today as a matter of fact...

I would read them now if I had them, btw should I buy the Alan Lee illustrated version or the nice red leather one or the paperbacks ?

During a long trip, I listened to FOTR on tape. I had forgotten about all the songs and poetry. When I had read the books I skipped anything that was italicized.....
