It IS a waste of money MOST of the time. If it wasn't then the people selling it wouldn't make anything, right? It's no different than insurance - over enough cases you're losing money on insurance when compared to the amount you make up in claims. All extended warranties are is paying for peace of mind.

$400 wasn't much, but $400+ how many years interest and at what rate (was it on credit card like most people)? Suppose you wanted to upgrade within that time since it appears that they're still improving the technology used in the rphdtv's. I also know an excellent repair person that is local that I'm almost sure wouldn't charge over $100 for the labor. Now, if it cost $1000 to repair... then the warranty "might" have been worth it... but even then I believe it's better to take chances because the business always wins in the end on those warrantys. I've seen 43" Hitachie (similar to mine) rphdtvs for ~$1300... your cost of warranting is almost a 1/3 of that! If it was a common problem, there's a chance that the manufacturer would cover it past standard warranty as well. When I had the warranty service come to fix the convergence... they screwed up and didn't close it out. I had to open the tv to reset it so I could adjust it myself. They left it in very poor condition and took about an hour of my time. I still say "bah" to warrantees.

Yes, the house always wins in the long run.

But view this for what it is: an insurance policy. You're paying a fixed amount up front to insure you against expensive repairs down the road that may or may not happen. With large screen TV's, repairs, if needed, can be very expensive.

I got an extended warranty on my Mits 65" with zero interest. Cost me a few hundred bucks. Was worth it to me.

paid $200 for a 4 year warranty on a sony WEGA 36" that costed $1200 for peace of mind.

nothing wrong with the unit for 3 years so far. gonna feel gipped if i don't cash in on some damage repair 🙁

Run about 10000 watts through it, they cover power surges.

With all the Crap Companies producing Crap quality components these days, the warranties are becoming more useful. I usually buy them based on how expensive the item is.

BestBuy tried to sell me a $5 warranty on a $9 answering machine. hmm. DOn't think so.

But on a $300 Receiver, I'll get the $40 warranty or whatever.

I got a brand new TV for $20 around last Christmas because my 4 year old 25" TV wasn't behaving and they coudln't fix it so they credited me the money towards a new one.

Worked well for me.

Glad I got my warranty for my Toshiba 50h82 😀 I think it was about $200 for 4 years. No problems yet, but at least I don't have to worry...and if it broke right now, I would get a brand new 50h83 or whatever the newest model is.

After I bought everything, the sales guy came up to me and said that it can "mysteriously break" a year down the line and I'll get the new model for free...I'm sure his company is proud to have him on the payroll :Q

my toshiba is 2 years old cost me 2300$ {700$ less than most best buys and cc's at the time}...
I didnt get the warranty.....if it breaks i will pay a few hundred and get it fixed.....
If it doesnt i am glad i didnt throw my 400$ away
