Ah crap, will this traffic ticket get on my insurance?

Driving a Pontiac Vibe (since my Focus is at the repair shop because of the hit and run thing) and if there's one complaint I have about it, the headlights are dangerously low. The dealer said they can't do a thing about this (the length goes about as far as a car and a half length). I'm not blaming that, I'm just letting people know that be very careful with that car.

Now for the story. Well I went to the beach with a few friends of mine, and there was, of course, a stop sign. No problem, I stop. Unfortunately, it was raining harder than usual, so the brakes didn't go as good as I wanted them. Car stops almost halfway into the street and the cop caught me on it. Got a ticket on it too. I can pay the $85 no problem, but I'm really really worried about it showing up on insurance, especially since I'm still young (20 yrs. old). My friend said it shouldn't, since he had a seat belt violation and it didn't go to his insurance, but I can still imagine it to go to insurance. If it does, I'm fvcked.

That cop was a dick. He should have just given you a warning. Any other cars around?

He was obviously driving too fast for the conditions if he saw a stop sign and stopped in the middle of the street.

I got the impression that he tried to stop, but his car slid because it was raining and his car didn't have ABS.

- Shut up and pay the damn ticket!
- You reckless bastard!
- You could have killed a retarded child riding a bike!

now that we got the usual replies out of the way, to your question:

if it's a single ticket on your otherwise clean driving record, insurance companies typically don't jack up the rates. Premiums go up after the second ticket/violation.

No, just him and I.

Which means he doesn't know how to properly handle his car in bad weather conditions. Just because it's raining out doesn't mean it's ok for you to "accidentally" break traffic laws.

Ah shat....this WOULD be my 2nd ticket, as I got one last year.

[one more edit] If there was a child riding a bike, I would've really hit the brakes hard. =0,

[edi]t 10 feet away from the 35 MPH zone in a 25 zone :( I didn't fight it because that was my fault, but I was told I could've fought it.

Well, you still have up to half a year before the new rates go into effect. Insurance companies do biannual reviews, if I'm not mistaken. Your older ticket may expire by that time.

did you do traffic school the first time? if not, go this time.

if you did, then you can't for this one. try going to the court, explaining what happened to the judge and try and get him to lessen the charge. maybe change it to a non moving violation with a similar fine.

I *almost* had a similar situation a few min. ago. Driving home, road is wet, saw a cop on the left hand side and the light just turned yellow. Was debating whether to hardbrake as to not risk it changing red and cop seeing me, or to speed up slightly and go through a yellow (hopefully not turning red) light. I opted to speed up a bit, and thankfully saw no flashing lights behind me afterwards.

Uh, I have no advice for you, just thought I'd share. :)

Might as well try. It's really going to suck for me for a few reasons:

1) It was at a township I was lost at trying to find my way back to the parkway
2) My dad (who I live with still until next year) will have to find out if that ticket violation gets to the insurance.

The brakes on the corolla/matrix/vibe are ok, no worse than a focus. The headlights are fine. I've tested on all of those cars, any normal driver would have been able to stop...you were driving too fast.

I wasn't blaming anything on the car, I was just asking what will happen, and now what can I do to help myself in this situation.

I'm so upset right now, I'm going to try and go to sleep and see just what can I do to make sure this won't upset the parents.

Serves you right for treating wet pavement like dry pavement, and driving too fast. You idiot.

Heheh. One time I was late for work and just got off the freeway. Was going 50 on a 45 road, and a light was about to turn yellow. Hit the gas and got up to maybe 55-60, didn't make the yellow and so was speeding and ran a red.

Thing is, there was a cop in the left turn lane headed the opposite direction. I immediately though "oh crap," but saw now sirens. I of course get caught at the next light like a 50 yards later (dunno distance, but could still see the back of the cruiser in my rear view). So then I'm at the light sweating and I see the cop make a u-turn and then change lanes to stop right behind me. Heart beats harder, light turns green and I start accelerating. About a block later he just changes to the far right lane and turns away. Probably just ran my plates to see if it was stolen or something and figured I was late for work, or donuts were running out or somethin.

I was told by my friend, who's training to become a police officer, to try and fight it.

The roads at the beach place are small, and since I was only a quarter way out there, checking my left (of course) to see if a car was coming, I still stopped less than or just about 5 feet from the stop sign. The braking was smooth and not hard and sudden. He said that would probably save me a lot in this.

Even so, I'm taking defensive driver's course to knock off those 2 points of a moving violation just in case.

That's not how it works in NJ. He can go to the judge, ask for the ticket to be ammended to a no-point infraction, and it'll cost him probably 3 times as much.

EGGO, your friend is clueless if he thinks a seatbelt ticket (no points) is the same as running a stop sign.

Edit: Come on, you think we're going to believe a cop gave you a ticket for stopping 5 feet past a stop sign?

Why the heck did you go down the shore on such a crappy weekend anyway?

Your best bet is to call the number on the ticket and ask what you can do to avoid having it affect your insurance. Seriously.
