newegg has ti4200 agp4x cards starting at around $145 - $165.
and there are leadtek/albatron/aopen/gainward/asus ti4200s with agp 8x support at 179-199$.
and then there are ti4400s of leadtek supporting agp4x at 186$.
the radeon 9500pro was my first choice but its not gonna be available by november 25th which is when my purchase will be made [by my cousin who will then send it here to me in india around december 13th..]
so, point being, which gf4ti variety should i go for, and what brand?
budget pref upto 180$, but a bit more should be okay. if i get a 9500 for 199 id be picking it up thats for sure though.
thanks for your opinions.

I'll tell you what I did and why (though there are some good reasons to take a different approach, depending on your preferences):

I had about the same budget, possibly spending up to 200 or slightly more. As I looked into it, my choices went from a 4200 to a 4600 (Radeon 9700 pro just cost too much right now). I am upgrading from a Geforce 3 (standard). I wanted to see a difference, but to get the most for my money as well.

I decided that the standard 4200 64mb was probably not going to be enough of a difference. I want to run a few games with some eye candy on - AA and possibly Ansio - so every little bit probably will make a difference. I also realize I will probably upgrade again in less than a year, so while the resale value is at least a factor (the 4400 assumedly selling better than any 4200, despite overclockability, etc.)

I bought the Leadtek 4400 from Newegg for $187. I thought about the 4200 with 128mb, but that was not as big a jump as I wanted and by the time you add the extra memory, you're not far from the 4400. According to reviews, this particular 4400 overclocks very well, and the pictures looked like it has a solid cooling system. AND it includes some nice game, which are probably worth another $20-25 to me. And I wanted to buy from Newegg, for reliable support.

Card should arrive by tomorrow, so I'll find out soon enough how good a choice I made.

I would go with the Leadtek. Comes with heatsinks and two fans. I got an asylum TI4200 128mb for cheap, otherwise i woud've gotten the Leadtek from newegg.

um, so what about the overclockable ti4200s? or more importantly, the AGP 8x ti4200s...around 185$, but im thinking of the 198$ gainward 128mb ti4200 agp 8x 3.6ns RAM [550mhz stock..] ?

Don't go for one video card over another solely because of its AGP 8x support. It's been shown that the performance increase from AGP 4x to 8x is pretty much negligible. For the price of the AGP 8x ti4200 cards you'd be better off getting a higher clocked card in my opinion.

yes but say when doom3 and stuff is out, and i have an 8x mobo, wouldnt a 8x ti4200 [gainward which comes with 3.6ns 550mhz ram and can easily touch 275 core of 4400] be better than a 4x 4400 ? coz i plan on keeping my card for 2 years....
itd effectively be an 8x ti4400, and wont 8x make a difference later too ?

I got a 4x Albatron ti4200 128MB@310/580 and it does what I wanted. In 6-12mths I'm sure it will not run the latest games as fast, the same with any card purchased today, so I can't look that far in to the future. The best I could say is get the fastest today so it might last as long as you want.

The recent reviews (don't remember where) I read was not showing that much of a difference.

Good Luck!

I just ordered a Leadtek ti4400 from Newegg and I'm quite excited. It will replace my Matrox G550 so I expect some real improvements to UT2003 play.

My Epox mobo 8K5A2+ is 4X AGP so I think it'll be a good match.

My cpu is a 1.4GHz oc'd to 1.75 so I don't see a 9700Pro as sensible. Besides, I feel more comfortable with Nvidia as I dual boot linux.

I've never used TV out so that could be cool.

Question: If I wanted to record a TV show as digital what would I need? I'm just giving this some thought.

Get the GF4ti4400 they have on sale on the main page at newegg.com. Those prices are too steap for a GF4, and from what I read, it is too early to be jumping on the agp 8x bandwagon, there is nothing that really needs it.

What video card do you have now? If you could, I would wait til after x-mas to get a card, they will be cheaper as nv30 is coming out soon.....

Go with the GF4 Ti4400 cause 8x AGP now or later will not help an old Ti4200 outpace a Ti4400. I would rather have the extra speed of the memory than a slower card with 8x AGP. It will be worth more to you in the future too.

i have the leadtek gf4 4400, and its really nice. running at 306 core and 650 memory. couple things about the card though....this sucker is heavy and it gets really hot! and since i've switched to all panaflos, i can hear the fans on the leadtek a bit...they have a higher pitched sound. not untolerable though.

drewdogg808,
Do you have the one with the video IN? I ordered the one without but I'm thinking of refusing the delivery and ordering the one with the vid in.

Also, has anyone seen the reviews placing the MSI Ti 4200 64MB on the top of the list for it's price range($130)?

I do need good 2D text as Leadtek is supposed to do, but I could use 2 video cards. I already have a Matrox G450.
