AGp vs. PCIe

Running:
Intel P4 3.2
AGP Nvidia 6600GT 128MB
2GB Corsair
Asus P4P800E-D

Looking to upgrade to a 6800GT or the 7-series lineup. I have heard a lot about the PCIe x16 boards but no conclusions. If I went with a PCIe setup I would have to get a new board, v-card and CPU(Socket-T); is it worth the extra cash to upgrade or would I not know the difference? Apps: hl2,CoD2,FEAR,D3,Q4 etc... Pros/Cons? Any suggestions would help.

If you got a 7800Gt, Hell yeah, you would notice a difference.

To to PCI-E, you would have to get a new mobo, a PCI-E v-card. I'm not sure about the CPU fitting into the socket since I'm not an Intel man.

The point of upgrading to PCI-E isn't to notice the benefits of PCI-E, it's to be able to run faster cards and in that respect, you will notice a difference.

Your current motherboard is socket 478, IIRC. So yes, you'll need to upgrade motherboard and CPU (new ones are socket 775)

You would need new RAM as well if you upgraded, but why not go to an AMD board instead if you do upgrade and assuming you play games, since AMD are better for gaming than Intel, and you could use your current RAM.

But honestly I would wait until January, since your 6000GT can probably hold you over Christmas, and then see if the new card(s), R580 etc are more worthwhile.
Plus I'm not sure current Intel chipsets will support the next lot of processors, but I think their new one due out soon is supposed to last for a while (til end of 06), and AMD should launch their new socket as well soon, so itmay not be a good time to buy anything PCIe.

The 6800GS has been seen for AGP though, and would be a slight upgrade.

why would he need new ram? you can use ddr1 on some intel 775 boards.

In your position, I'd probably buy x850xt at microcenter for $250 or a 6800GS when it reaches markets next week in AGP.

Yes you will realize gains with an A64 platform, but considering new mobo = $100, + A64 3200+ = $150 + 7800GT = $300 = $550, you are going to pay more than 2x for about 30-40% increase. Plus both current intel chipsets and s939 will reach end of life really soon. So you'll end up upgrading to platforms that dont even have future lifetime either.

I'd get the 6800GS/x850xt and then do a major makeover in a year or 1.5 --> to dual core, DDR2, say socket M2 (amd), and PCIe.

I've got a similar rig to yours and I found out Albatron makes a board with skt 478 and a PCIe 16x slot. Checkout Newegg

(I'd miss my P4P800E D however.)
