Is an HD4650 1GB card pretty decent?

I have a supermicro X5DAE dual Xeon workstation with a 6800 Ultra that died and it was suggested that I replace it with this card. How much better (or worse?) is it? I would HOPE it would be better even bottlenecked by the CPUs (2.66GHz Xeon x2, 4GB REG ECC Memory). This system run XP Pro.

If you're looking for GPU power the HD4650 is actually quite a bit less than a 4670 which they do make in an AGP flavor.

Of that class of GPU you're looking at.

4650 (10%)< 9500 (10%)< 4670 (5%)< 9600 GT

It really depends on your resolution and whatever apps you're attempting to run.

Well I have a Radeon 9200SE in there now and that's just sick compared to the 6800 ultra that was in there before. Is the 4670 the most powerful AGP card now? The PSU should be OK at 650Watts - 48A on 12V.

It uses about 40w(4a) on the 12v so yeah your psu is way overkill.

Is it worth the ~$100 pricetag vs an upgrade? That's up to you. If you did spend the money on the 4670 you would be CPU limited for sure.

AGP um quite long ago, do they still make gcards for it nowadays? if ATI still do, good for them. but why do you need lots gcard power on a workstation?

It's a programming machine (for AV hardware in theater) that uses some older software that does not run in Vista/7. Some of the interfaces use OpenGL and run pretty good on this hardware. The machine still runs really well considering it was built in 2003.

If you're not gaming get the 4650. $70. You can find lesser cards ($55 3650) but they're not worth the $15 difference IMO.

Agreed a 3850 ~= 9600gt a bit more than a 4670 by like 5%
