AGP stays at zero

I've got an asus p4p800 deluxe and a ati radeon 9800 pro video card. Checking the system specs, I see that the AGP port is set to zero. Looking at Smartgart, a page in the advanced settings menu of display properties, confirms this. Fast write is disabled as well. When I change this to either 4 or 8X, I reboot. Upon entering windows, the display will blank briefly, then resume. Checking Smartgart again, shows that it reset back to zero. Why?
