AGP questions!!!

Hi AnandTech users, this is my first time posting...

Well, my questions is.... If my motherboard only supports AGP 1x, can I use a newer card such as Geforce2 MX, which mostly supports 2x/4x AGP. I understand that if the motherboard supports up to 4x, it pretty much supports all kinds of AGP cards, but does this also works the other way around??

Thanks.

thanx for your help.. Well, I have a Soyo 7IZB+ motherboard, but I can't find the AGP type of this board, don't know if it's 1X or 2X, does anyone know about it? also, I have a Voodoo 3 3000, is that also 1x AGP or it's 2x? just curious...

Thanks

Your mobo is a 1X AGP, goto the Soyo website. You board is listed there under support, I just looked at the manual for your board.

I think the Voodoo 3 series supported AGP 2x, though it didn't do AGP texturing (I'm not totally sure on this). the Voodoo 4/5 series on the other hand didn't support AGP 2x, becuase of the dual chip nature of the Voodoo 5..

I would go with a Geforce 2 GTS(can get for as low as 120bucks) or maybe even a Geforce 3 Ti 200 (as low as 180)

Both will be limited slightly by the 1X bandwidth(probably around 10-20% performance decrease) but they will still run fast and be a nice upgrade

you can also get a gf2 ti 200 for pretty cheap, with comparable speed to the gf2 ultra
