AGP Pro 4x and Radeon 9800

I am thinking about buying a Radeon 9800, but my motherboard book says my AGP slot is an AGP Pro 4x. Is this going to hurt the performance of the radeon? ATI's site says the 9800 has AGP 8x support.

I have an Athlon 1800+ and 512 MB DDR memory, so I am hoping all I need to do right now is upgrade the video card. Maybe in half a year or so upgrade the CPU and motherboard again.

What does anyone else think?

what video card do you have?

agp 4x wont hurt anything at all

8x is largely a marketing gimmick, especially considering that AGP will be phased out in the next couple of years.

Yeah, PCI Express 16X for video, PCI Express 1X for all other add-in cards (at least to begin).

To get back to the topic - putting a Radeon 9800 in an AGP 4X slot is fine, and you will not have a tangible speed difference at all... The 1800+ will probably hold you back some, but it will still be a huge speed increase from your original Radeon.

I have a ATI 9800 PRO running on a ASUS P4T-533-C, it only supports AGP 4X and it doesn't hurt a thing as I am able to score > 5700 in 3d Mark 03 version 330 patched (No Cheats/optimizations 🙂)

Dude...I just went from a Radeon 7200 32MB DDR to a Radeon 9800 PRO. I had an even worse setup (XP 1700+, 512 SDRAM, and AGP 4X), and the performance increase was incredible. I can run anything maxed out and with insane resolutions (well above 1024x768). You will be fine...go for it. You can always upgrade the processor/motherboard later if something like HL2 or D3 doesn't run too spectacularily. The visual quality difference in even current games between the two graphics cards is amazing.
