it depends on what motherboard and video card you have(you may even have intergrated graphics:Q)
if your mobo goes like this
i845Gx-the G represents intergrated graphics

Actually, looks like you're in good shape. AGP slot according to Dell's site.

Check out Dell's website or open up your case and see if you have an AGP slot. It'll be the first expansion slot closest to the CPU (top to bottom) and the insert will be further from the back of the case compared to the PCI slots.

But as the others said, if you had a choice, AGP for sure.

The card that's in it now is a GeForce 4 MX 420, so I assume it not integrated graphics. I need to upgrade it with a card with digital output so that I can use my LCD in digital mode. Office computer, no games on it.

Well, you can replace the MX with a cheapy MX with DVI out, or you can pick up a PCI with DVI output. I'd go with a new AGP w/ DVI as it'll make it a bit easier to set up.
