AGP or PCI-express??

I'm upgrading a new machine this week and I've narrowed it down to getting an AMD64 San Diego 3700+. As far as a video card I have a GeForce 6800 128mb AGP card. This card is great and I don't really feel the need to shell out another $300+ for a PCI-express, but I will if I must.

Do you guys think I should just go with the AGP motherboard and save my money or get the PCI-express motherboard and force myself to upgrade to that new video card?

If I would upgrade I'd probably look at getting this card....

Seems pointless to replace your vid card now when you don't have too. Get a good agp board like the MSI one and save some cash.

personally, i'd sell the agp and go with an nf4 board.

It's up to your budget, but I really don't see the improvement of changing your current top end apg for pic-e for now. Might as well save the dough and get the whole new upgrade next time.

If your happy with your card get a good agp board. There is hardly if any performance difference between NF3 and NF4. And I am pretty sure the next latest and greatest from ATI and Nvidia will be agp as well. AGP is not the future but is far from dead.

That is a nice proc that will probably last you for a while. If I was you, I would get a PCIe mobo for that 3700+ and switch over to PCIe. Either that or go with a real budget model socket 939 AGP mobo that you won't mind having to replace when you want to get a new video card. This way, you can get into socket 939 for cheap, but when the next gen video cards come out, and you switch over to PCIe, you will be able to evaluate all of your options (G70, G70 SLI, R520, and R520 AMR/MVP), and buy the motherboard that will best suit your needs. Whatever you do, I would not let a vanilla 6800 dictate your purchases for the entire system, as this video card will become obsolete before anything else.

Save your money ... buy an AGP board ... their performance is basically the same as the PCI-E

But ... keep in mind that socket 939 will be phased out by next year ... so if you're thinking of keeping this setup until end of 2006 or longer go with AGP and save some money ... besides I believe most video card manufacturer will still produce both AGP and PCI-E cards for some time

PCI-E will only make sense if you're really looking to upgrade very often.
Besides selling your AGP for a PCI-E variant doesn't really make much economic sense to me.

I have been thinking about this also since I will have the same problem come early Fall when I plan to move to socket 939. Since you are upgrading now though I say stay with AGP. Now come this fall I may go with PCIe. Depends on what I can get for my 6800nu.

ya although it depends on ur budget...i would upgrade to PCI-e since AGP cards will slowly fade off in a year!! better to have a PCI-e now and spend a little more now!

As I said I'm currently running a GeForce 6800 AGP and my brother is running a GeForce Ti4200 AGP, is it worth it for him sticking with the Ti4200? Cause when I'm building this new PC i'm passing down my old one to him, minus a few parts. Should he take my 6800 and I get a new graphics card or will his Ti4200 be sufficient for now?

was planning on that, but then I'd forced to get a new graphics card and at that point it would make no sense sticking with AGP

basically, update now and front a good deal of cash or just hold off? i'm just worried the ti4200 might not live up to some of the games out there if my brother decides to play them
