AGP/LCD advice

my current machine is an athlon 2500xp, 1gb ram, radeon 9800 video card, etc etc. i am looking to get the Viewsonic VX2025WM lcd monitor as i'm tired of my 19" CRT, plus i think it is dying. i'm looking for advice as to what I should do because I dont think my 9800 will do 1680x1050, even with the only game i play currently - WoW. I was planning to upgrade when conroe comes out, but i'm not sure how their affordable chips (1.83 and 2ghz) will stack up, especially since the a64's will drop in price around the same time.

so, i guess i'm just trying to figure out if i should wait and maybe how long before upgrading, whether my card will run wow at the viewsonic's resolution, or if i should take some action to prolong the life of my current machine, even though it's AGP. any suggestions?

The Gaywad is prolly best but at a steep premium, especially if it must be imported from o'er the pond and thus entails extra shipping, duties, tax, currency fees, &c. You may be better getting the fastest used Radeon X8xx BBQ or whatever for the short term. At least the value won't plummet so long as new mid to high-end AGP cards are not produced in volume. In any case, if a new display is required now but the oomph isn't available to play your game at maximum resolution then it could always be set to use a smaller area and optionally scaled up if you don't mind the blurring (at least until upgrading).

honestly, I would rather upgrade to PCI-e since it aint that expensive these days you know 😉.

PCIe graphics cards themselves are cheaper than AGP, but! you have to factor in the cost of a new mobo, and depending on what mobo he gets, ram and CPU as well.

Yeah, I could prolly part out my system and sidegrade at no cost and likely even make some money in the bargain but I don't feel like spending the time messin' with it, especially if the new system is not exactly what I want and shan't serve as a base for future upgrades over the next couple years at least.

Anyhoo, I popped back into this thread to point the OP to this hot deal.

I'm running the eVGA 7800GS CO Superclock AGP card and the ViewSonic VX2025wm 20" LCD and its sweetness. I'll admit though that this is the last year for AGP no matter what card they make for it. From here on out people really need to get into PCIe. Considering all thats going on in Intel/AMD and SLI/Crossfire and the gaming world it'll be far more advantageous for you to upgrade to a new system.

the way things are going, I'll be doing just that...I told my boss not to order to many of the bloody things but noooo he reckoned they would sell like hot cakes...and yet he wouldn't order me a BFG 7800GS OC for my rig(I don't like the gainwards...yukky red PCB..I like blue)

thanks for that post auric. i saw that thread yesterday but the x800 xl wasnt in stock. it is today though, so i'm thinking about picking it up along with the vx2025wm. i'm still torn between waiting to upgrade, as i think if i wait a couple more months i can go with an a64 x2 and a nicer video card since prices will be cut pretty significantly. i figure if i've waited this long to upgrade, what's another few months?
