AGP Compatibility

I was passing my old GeForce4 MX420 card to my sister who has an older Gateway Essential 500. I found on the net that it's motherboard is AGP 1x/2x. Will the GeForce4 MX work in it without damaging the card or PC?

I believe a 2x/4x card should work with a 1x/2x mobo as long as they are keyed the same.
