Agp card

Hi All,

I have been out of the loop for a while and need a fast AGP card w/256 mb. Just looking for a few suggestions. I was looking in the guides but alot of the info seems pretty old now that PCi card are the top dog.

Assuming you have a system with at least 1 gig of ram, and A64 3000+ or P4 3.2ghz, your best bet is X1950Pro when it comes out shortly.

Otherwise, 7800GS, 7600GT, X850XT, X850XT PE, X800XT, 6800GT/Ultra are your next best alternatives.

I'm thinking basically at the moment: buy the cheapest bridge card that will work and wait for DX10. I just went from an AGP 6800GT to a PCIe 7600GT to hold me over.

I'm in that same boat right now. I'm using a shuttle, so a switch from AGP to PCIe means more of an investment than a new mobo. I want to upgrade my 9600xt, and because it is a holdover, I want to aim for the sub-150 mark. If the x1950 really does debut at 200, I'd go for it and just wait a little longer on the full upgrade, but I have my doubts that it will.

My local fry's has a BFG OC'd 6800GS on sale for 130, and it's tempting me to grab it.

the AGP version of x1950p debuts at $249 . . . market pricing comes into play when there is a good supply and competition.

and it is identical - performancewise - with the PCIe version. THAT'S 'how' we know how it will perform and MAY be worth waiting for.

I'm with you, there's no doubt the x1950 will be a powerful contender, but for me, the difference between 200 and 250 is significant, as is the jump from 150 to 200.

For example, I can, right now, pick up a BFG OC'd 6800GS for 130 or a BFG OC'd 7800GS for 200. That's a +50% jump in price; the performance jump would need to at least match the price jump for me to justify the expense.

LOL! That's the best. I guess if you can't actually buy one that makes it the better value?

No release date, no actual prices listed, no AGP benchmarks.....sounds like a winner.

OverclockersUK are charging something like £159.99 + VAT on their site. They're taking orders now. However, for cards that are released, something like a 7800gs would do fine until the DX10 cards hit the market. Still, I would not get one of the first DX10 cards, as with all new technology, there are likely to be lots of bugs that need to be ironed out. Besides, I'd rather wait for a larger selection to be available and some real life benchmarks to be released with retail cards before I buy one.

You'll get ripped off on these newer agp cards. IMO get a 6800ultra or x850xt and call it a day.
