AGP Card for PIII

I have a Gateway PIII that is being used by my 6 yr old. This system came with a flat panel monitor and I really need to use it because of limited space. I have found a used ATI 9100 with DVI but can't seem to find out from ATI website if this card will work in the AGP 2 slot. I realize that a agp 4 might work , but I can't find out what this card is. Also will take any suggestions for a replacement card that won't break the bank. I'll even look for something on ebay. Thanks

The card has both 1.5 and 3.3 slots. According to the MB manual, conforms to AGP port spec rev 2.0 or later. 1.5 or 3.3 v interface. I will have to open it back up and check the MB slot. For now it has an old ATI rage in it with CRT monitor but theres no room for keyboard on the desk so he's holding on his lap. Disaster waiting to happen. Thanks for that link, it should help me out.

If it has a 1.5v interface, then it's AGP 4x capable. Run CPU-Z to figure out what chipset is in the board, it's very likely it's an Intel 8xx chipset, all of which support AGP 4x(when AGP is supported).

Ouch, you're going to be SOL then. The 440BX only supported AGP 2x, few if any modern AGP cards fit that form factor however. You'd be looking at an early R300 card (Radeon 9700 or Radeon 9500) or a GeForceFX card at best. The 9100 is old enough that it should work though.

Most of the GF4 Ti-4xxx cards are massive overkill for that old P3, and they tend to run relatively hot. In Dx8, and in OpenGL, the 4600s are faster than the Radeon 9600 Pro, running right beside the 9700, but they don't do Dx9, so the Radeon crad was the better choice in the long run. The MX cards are trash, but they can do Dx7, I think, and are AGP 1/2.

There are still TNT2 cards in the Overstocks and Surplus market, but the GF3s are also out there in that part of the distribution chain, still new, and AGP 1/2 compatible. I can't say too much about the ATI cards predating the 8500, I have little familiarity with them.

I went ahead a got this ati 9100, only have to give $10if it works or goes up in smoke.
Thanks everyone!.......................Chuck

I had to go through this research when I needed a card with DVI for my Super-7 board (AGP 1x/2x only).

I think the best you're going to be able to do because of AGP slot voltage limitations is a Radeon 9500 card.

The good news is that for now, ATI/AMD is still supporting Radeon 9500 cards in it's driver updates...it literally is the oldest card in the Catalyst driver packs.
