Hi all,

I have a computer setup to my tv. Not a fancy home theater type setup, just something that plays video files. Trouble is it's onboard graphics card (comp is about 5 years old) can't handle 16x9, so it's stuck with big black bars on either side, then when you want to watch something widescreen, it limits the screen size even more.
So I need a graphics card (AGP only) that can handle 16x9 resolutions. I was currently looking at a geforce 4 MX, but I can't find any specs on the resolutions it supports.
Can anyone help? Thanks.

tl;dr need an agp card that will support 16x9 resolution (TV), something that will play movies, no games/heavy use. Price minimal.

I'm guessing it's not your video card -- are you using svideo (TV out) as the output? If so you're limited to 640x480 or at most 800x600. Neither one of those are widescreen resolutions. Your tv is taking the svideo signal and displaying the black bars. As long as you are not using DVI/HDMI (and possibly VGA) you'll have the same problem with any card.

Most widescreen TVs have a stretch feature, possibly per input. You should be able to stretch the 640x480 to full screen. Then it's simply a matter of communicating your display's pixel aspect ratio to your operating system to have it do the rest.

Trivial under linux (or any console), no clue how to do that w/ windows.

Thanks for the reply. It is connected using VGA. I'd ideally like to avoid stretch as I like people in the proportions they were designated at the beginning of existence (be it by evolution or a monotheistic/polytheistic deity).

I know my graphics card at the moment can display a 16x9 resolution, as I have both a 16x9 and 16x10 monitor connected. This is on another PC using a Geforce 8800GT, which sadly doesn't come in AGP for under NZ$100 afaik.
