AGP apperture size????

When i enable agp fast write in my bios i see my agp aperture size that can be ajusted. I have a evga 6800 ultra/LE should i set mine to 256mb because it was default at 64mb. What is agp apperture size anyways?
 
The maximum amount of RAM the system may dynamically allocate for texture memory. It essentially acts as overflow for the RAM on the card. The more RAM you have on the video card, the less AGP Aperture you need (if at all). I suggest setting 128MB or so.

so on a 6800 i should use 128mb even if i have 1 gig? I have nothing open when gaming so should i use 256 instead?
 
This is usually different for every system. Start out at 256, bench your system. Then drop to 128, bench again. I know some 6800s in machines who refuse to work at their best unless the aperature is set at 256. Mine however, works fine at 128.

Im considering running it at 256 because my system absolutley uses no apps during gaming and normally. My cpu normally skipps between 0-1% usage and only around 100mb of ram. Also i have a gig of ram thats 900mb of system capability. How much do graphic intensive games take up with 4xaa 8xaf? What are your thoughts on this would you go up to 256?
 
You should use the least amount of system RAM as possible. This is not because you may need the RAM later for other purposes, but because System RAM is slooooowww compared to VRAM. The best way is just to use a real-world bench and work the Aperture down to the lowest point where you lose no FPS. The higher the resolution, and the more calls for non-local textures, certain vertex arrays etc, the more system RAM the card will use. The trick is to use the minimum amount of system RAM that you can without hurting overall performance.
 
Setting to 256 MB helped BF2 for me. Of course I have 2GB of ram so I have a bit to spare. People with 1GB of RAM may not see the same performance jump.
