AGP 8X - Hype, or should I be upgrading?

Nvidia announced yesterday AGP 8X for the Ti 4200 and MX's, while ATI beat them to the punch with the 9700.

What's everyone's view on 8X??

Does a simple 8X M/B and video card mean better frame rates on today's games, or do they have to be written with 8X in mind??

Pretty much hype.

If you don't have enough memory on your video card and start texture thrashing then no AGP bus is going to be fast enough, even the new AGP 3.0/8x. You may start to see the benifits in future games but don't upgrade just for 8x. Wait until you have to upgrade for some other reason and get an 8x board at that time. There hasn't been a big jump in AGP since we went from 1x to 2x.

Good, cause I just bought a Ti4600! I couldn't pass on the $221.00 pricetag.

I do plan to upgrade my M/B in about 6 months, AGP 8X will be a feature. Then plan to sell the Ti4600 card in a year, and upgrade to Nvidia's latest greatest chip (after price falls!).

Thanks for the info guys. I'm breathing easier... :)

At one time(before it was available) AGP made a lot of sense. Those were the days when ram was hella expensive, but the price dropped and the purpose of AGP was lost(with the exception of a dedicated bus).

Waste. Hardly any difference between 2x and 4x. Even less between 4x and 8x. Don't worry about it.

I couldn't agree with everyone else more. Its just a really big marketing gimmick, no reason to really need it. Eventually it'll become the new standard.
