Hi guys,

one of our dispatchers at work needs a new GPU in his computer. He only has an AGP slot and refuses to upgrade. He also doesn't want to shell out $300+ for the 7950GT in AGP. He says he is torn between the 7600GT 512MB version and the 7900GS 256MB card. (Does that even come in 512?)

His sole purpose for this card is to help drive Microsoft FLight Sim. I don't know what version he has, but he's running a LOT of added terrain and textures so I'm thinking he might benefit from the higher memory of the 7600GT, but the 7900GS seems a faster card in general (though I've only seen it compared to the 256MB 7600GT, not the 512MB one).

What are your thoughts? Right now he has a 5950 Ultra, 512MB I believe. Which would provide better performance for the Flight Sim?

Any one of these three cards should do a great job running this game at resolutions up to 1280x1024. Above that point the 7800GS and 7900GS are probably going to take a significant lead due to their higher memory bandwidth (~42GB/s vs 24GB/s for the 7600GT).

thanks for the responses guys.

Am I correct to assume that the 7600GT with 512 MB isn't substantially better than the 256MB version? and therefore, still wouldn't match the 7900GS? FWIW, he uses Flight sim on a 22" widescreen monitor, probably 1680x1050 I suspect.
